THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro opened the season with four straight wins, but the Fighting Scots travel to Slippery Rock looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Fighting Scots are 5-11 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC West following Wednesday's 86-75 loss to Seton Hill. After playing three straight games at home, Edinboro plays its next two contests on the road, at Slippery Rock on Saturday and at Mercyhurst on Wednesday, January 29. Slippery Rock has won three of its last four games to even its overall record at 9-9, and improve to 5-7 in league play.
  • A depleted Edinboro squad faced a very difficult schedule recently. Prior to the last two contests vs. Clarion and Seton Hill, the combined record of Edinboro's previous four opponent's coming into the game was 46-8, with IUP ranked seventh nationally and West Chester tenth.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll.  Edinboro is averaging 72.3 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and is 17th in scoring defense, allowing 84.3 ppg. Slippery Rock ranks 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 75.9 ppg., and is eighth in scoring defense at 74.6 ppg. SRU has traditionally been one of the top rebounding teams in the PSAC, and this year is no exception. The Rock is third in the conference in rebounding margin at +6.4.
  • The Fighting Scots have been without leading scorer Anthony Coleman the last three games due to an injury. In addition, key reserve Anthony Allen missed Wednesday's game due to illness and several other players suffered maladies during the game. Coleman, a 6'3" redshirt senior, is averaging 18.8 ppg. and has made 33-of-79 3-pointers. He is sixth in the PSAC in scoring. He is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg., along with being second on the team with 12 steals. He has had six games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • After earning second team All-PSAC West honors a year ago, junior Jaryn Simpson is enjoying another strong season. The 6'3" junior scored a career-high 38 points against Clarion, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. Simpson followed that up with 20 points vs. Seton Hill and is now averaging 16.9 ppg.  He adds 5.1 rpg., along with a team-high 65 assists and 15 steals. He ranks third in assists in the PSAC and has made 40-of-103 3-pointers. That's good for third in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.9). A year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.

The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 14.1 ppg. and a team-high 7.6 rpg. while shooting 52.8 percent from the floor (86-of-163), good for third in the PSAC. He also ranks third in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 87.1 percent (54-of-62). Staunch has scored in double figures the last eight games, and has had two double-doubles in the last five games. Over the last eight games, he is averaging 17.6 ppg. and 9.4 rpg. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, has started the last nine games after coming off the bench the first seven contests. He is averaging 9.9 ppg., and broke out of a mini-slump with 18 points against Seton Hill. He had been limited to six points the previous two games. Alex Jay comes in at 6.3 ppg. • Kameron King made his first career start against Seton Hill. The 6'5" sophomore has seen limited time in ten games but scored six points in 24 minutes on Wednesday.
  • Jack Gallagher has emerged as a key player off the bench the last two games. The freshman guard had played in just five games for a total of 17 minutes prior to entering in the first half against Clarion. He would play 18 minutes, providing four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, along with a huge amount of energy. Against Seton Hill, he had five points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes.

SCOUTING SLIPPERY ROCK
  • Slippery Rock was picked to finish second in the PSAC West after posting a 19-10 record a year ago under first-year head coach Ian Grady. Eight players returned from that squad, but Grady had to do without All-PSAC West performer Micah Till for the first semester. The Rock got off to a 4-4 start without the 6'7", 250 lb. redshirt senior. Till has played the last ten games. SRU comes in with a 9-9 record and is 5-7 in the PSAC West. However, they have won three of their last four games, including an impressive 62-52 win at Mercyhurst on Wednesday in which they jumped out to an 18-0 lead. Their last three losses have been by a combined eight points. Grady can call on a trio of scorers that contributes almost 54 points. Will Robinson Jr. leads the way at 19.7 ppg. The 6'5" senior via McNeese State adds a team-0high 8.7 rpg. And has made 90-of-111 free throws. Till comes in at 17.3 ppg. and 6.8 rpg. Along with 14 blocks. A year ago he averaged 21.0 ppg. and 10.0 rpg. Jared Armstrong, a 5'10" senior, is third on the team in scoring at 16.8 ppg. He has made 35-of-78 3-pointers. Amante Britt, a 5'10" sophomore, is the team's playmaker. He has 62 assists and 27 steals, both team highs.
