THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro wraps up the first half of action in PSAC West competition at Mercyhurest. With just over a month to go in the season, it has been an up-and-down campaign for the Fighting Scots. They opened the season with four straight wins, but the Fighting Scots travel to Mercyhurst looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Fighting Scots are 5-12 overall and 2-11 in the PSAC West following Saturday's 79-73 loss at Slippery Rock. If that game was any indication, Edinboro is close to snapping a skid that has seen leading scorer Anthony Coleman miss the last four games. Mercyhurst had run off four straight wins, but after Saturday's 69-51 loss at Cal, has dropped two games in a row. The Lakers are 10-7 overall and 8-5 in league play.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll.  Edinboro is averaging 72.4 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and is 16th in scoring defense, allowing 84.0 ppg. Mercyhurst ranks 13th in the PSAC in scoring at 73.9 ppg., and is second in scoring defense at 66.6 ppg., holding seven opponents to 60-points-or-less. The Lakers are third in the conference in turnover margin at +3.65.
  • The Fighting Scots have been without leading scorer Anthony Coleman the last four games due to an injury, and several other players have missed time of late. They were also without second-leading scorer Jaryn Simpson for two games.  Coleman, a 6'3" redshirt senior, is averaging 18.8 ppg. and has made 33-of-79 3-pointers. He is sixth in the PSAC in scoring. He is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg., along with being second on the team with 12 steals. He has had six games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • After earning second team All-PSAC West honors a year ago, junior Jaryn Simpson is enjoying another strong season. Simpson is averaging 16.9 ppg., while adding 5.1 rpg., along with a team-high 70 assists and 15 steals. He ranks third in assists in the PSAC and has made 43-of-112 3-pointers. A year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.

Staunch has scored in double figures the last nine games, and has had two double-doubles in the last six games. Over the last nine games, he is averaging 17.7 ppg. and 9.2 rpg. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
