Staunch, Allen Lead the Way in Loss at Mercyhurst

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) ERIE, Pa. – The inside tandem of Trey Staunch and Anthony Allen combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Edinboro suffered a 93-56 loss at Mercyhurst on Wednesday evening. With the setback, Edinboro is now 5-13 and 2-12 in the PSAC West, while the Lakers improved to 11-7 and 9-5, respectively.

On Saturday, Edinboro had battled down to the wire at Slippery Rock, while Mercyhurst made just 1-of-24 3-pointers while losing at Cal U.
Four days later, the Fighting Scots fell behind early and could never catch up against a Lakers' team that made its first six shots, four of those 3-pointers. Turner Kurt opened the scoring with a basket for a 2-0 lead, but Mercyhurst would take a 21-4 lead less than six minutes later. That included a run of 13 straight points.

Mercyhurst would hold a 46-23 lead at the half, as the Lakers shot 50.0 percent in the half, including going 9-of-20 on 3-pointers. Edinboro, meanwhile, shot 32.0 percent (8-of-25), missing all 10 3-point attempts. They also committed nine turnovers.

Edinboro would pull to within 19 points on two occasions in the second half, the last at 54-35 on Kurt's 3-pointer with 15:53 remaining. Mercyhurst answered with the next nine points.

Staunch had his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He was 5-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-8 at the line. Allen also made 5-of-8 field goal attempts while scoring a career-high 11 points, pulling down six rebounds, and blocking a pair of shots.

Edinboro ended the night shooting 36.5 percent from the floor (19-of-52), making just 1-of 19 3-pointers. The Scots were 17-of-22 at the line. Mercyhurst finished at 48.6 percent from the floor (36-of-74), making 13-of-37 3-pointers, while going 8-of-13 at the line.

The rebound battle was even, with Mercyhurst pulling down 40 and Edinboro 39. Edinboro totaled 20 turnovers while the Lakers committed six. They held a 28-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

Four Lakers scored in double digits, led by MiyKah McIntosh with 20 points. He made 5-of-11 3-pointers. Cameron Gross had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Michael Bradley totaled 12 points and seven assists. Andrew Seager scored 10 points.

The Fighting Scots return to action one week, hosting another local rival, Gannon, on Wednesday, February. The contest is the second EUKnighted game of the season between the two rivals, and will serve as a fundraiser for the Pa. Soldiers & Sailors Home. Fans can enjoy the Hoopy Hour at the Edinboro Hotel from 4-7 p.m.
