String of Difficult Games Continues as Edinboro Hosts Pitt-Johnstown

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro looks to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering a 91-72 loss to tenth-ranked West Chester on Monday. The Fighting Scots have also lost seven of their last eight games after opening the season with four straight wins. Monday's game was the first game at McComb Fieldhouse since December 1. Edinboro is 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC.
  • Pitt-Johnstown also played on Monday, winning its fourth straight game in dramatic fashion. Trailing by two points to Gannon, Joe Batt drained a 3-pointer with under two seconds remaining for an 82-81 win over Gannon.  That left the Mountain Cats with a 12-2 overall record, and 6-1 in the PSAC. UPJ is ranked sixth in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region rankings. The Mountain Cats lost their season opener to Concord by three points, ran off eight straight wins before losing at Bloomsburg.          
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while West Chester was picked third in the Western Division. Edinboro is averaging 72.2 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC, and also 16th in scoring defense, allowing 80.7 ppg. Pitt-Johnstown ranks sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 81.9 ppg., while also standing sixth in scoring defense at 72.9 ppg. The Mountain Cats are also first in the conference in field goal percentage at 51.7 percent, while standing third in field goal percentage defense at 40.5 percent and fourth in rebound margin (+4.8). 
  • Edinboro showcases a trio of double figure scorers, led by Anthony Coleman at 19.1 ppg., good for sixth in the PSAC. The 6'3" redshirt senior guard matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. He has made 28-of-62 3-pointers, ranks second in rebounding at 6.0 rpg., and has a team-high 11 steals. He was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Backcourt mate Jaryn Simpson adds 15.0 ppg. and 5.2 rpg., along with a team-high 44 assists. He has also made 24-of-60 3-pointers. The 6'3" junior guard comes off his best game of the season, scoring 27 points and handing out seven assists vs. West Chester.  He was a second team All-PSAC West honoree a year ago after averaging a team-high 18.0 ppg. He made 76-of-210 3-pointers a year ago. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Trey Staunch is the third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 12.8 ppg. and a team-high 6.4 rpg. while shooting 57.0 percent from the floor (57-of-100), good for fourth in the PSAC. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago. He has turned in a yeomen's effort the last games while facing a pair of imposing Gannon and West Chester frontlines, finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds against Gannon and 16 points and eight boards vs. WCU..
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, came off the bench until joining the starting lineup the last four games. He provides 9.9 ppg. Alex Jay comes in at 7.3 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.7 rpg. and has made 18-of-46 3-pointers.

  • Jaryn Simpson turned in a monster effort for the Fighting Scots as Edinboro avenged a 100-88 loss at Pitt-Johnstown in January. The sophomore guard posted the first triple-double at Edinboro since the 2007-08 season, finishing with 25 points and career-highs of 14 rebounds and 11 assists. He led a group of five players in double figures. Turner Kurt added 17 points and Daylon Harris and DeAnthony Owens added 14 points apiece. Alex Jay had 10 points. Trey Staunch pulled down 12 rebounds as Edinboro dominated the glass, 46-27. John Paul Krumka paced four Mountain Cats in double figures with 21 points, adding nine rebounds and five assists. Fred Mulbah and Romano Sebastiani had 19 points apiece, with Mulbah handing out seven assists. Marcin Wiszormirski came off the bench to contribute 12 points.
HEAD COACH 
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-92, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm and has a 79-92 record, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.           
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.  
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING PITT-JOHNSTOWN
  • Long-time UPJ head coach Bob Rukavina was named the 2018-19 PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading the Mountain Cats to a 17-13 finish. He entered the season ranking among the leaders of active Division II coaches in wins (485) and winning percentage (.585). He has boosted his win total to 497 while guiding UPJ to a 12-2 start. Overall, Rukavina is in his 31st season at the helm and has a 497-346 career record. A balanced and deep UPJ squad has five players averaging nine-or-more points, and is shooting an amazing 51.7 percent as a team. John Paul Kromka leads the Mountain Cats in scoring (16.7 ppg.) and rebounding (7.4 rpg.). In addition, he leads the PSAC in field goal percentage at 65.4 percent and blocked shots with a total of 42. A year ago, the 6'7" sophomore was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and was a second team All-PSAC West selection. Caiden Landis, also a 6'7" sophomore, adds 13.1 ppg. and 4.8 rpg. while shooting 61.6 percent from the floor. Drew Magestro and Fred Mulbah contribute 9.7 ppg. Magestro is a 6'3" redshirt sophomore who was a second team all-conference performer in 2017-18 before sitting out last season. An outstanding 3-point threat, he has made 24-of-49 3-pointers. Mulbah is a 5'9" sophomore who has 104 assists against just 43 turnovers. He leads the PSAC in assists (7.4 ppg.). Josh Wise was a first team All-PSAC West selection a year ago after averaging 17.9 ppg. and 5.8 rpg. The 6'3" senior guard comes in at 7.6 ppg. Another sophomore, Joe Batt adds 9.5 ppg.
