Edinboro Plays for Fourth Time in Nine Days at Cal

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro has faced a tough stretch that has seen the Fighting Scots lose three games in a row and seven of their last eight after opening the season with four straight wins. Their last two opponents, tenth-ranked West Chester and Pitt-Johnstown, came in with a combined 24-2 record. Edinboro is 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC following Wednesday's narrow 86-83 loss to Pitt-Johnstown.
  • Both Edinboro and Cal are playing for the fourth time in nine days. The Vulcans have won back-to-back games following a 74-61 win over Shepherd on Wednesday to improve to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in league play. That's one more win than a year ago when they finished at 8-19. Three of Cal's five losses have been by a combined four points.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while Cal was picked fifth in the Western Division. Edinboro is averaging 73.1 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC, and is also 16th in scoring defense, allowing 81.2 ppg. Cal ranks fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 81.5 ppg., while standing 11th in scoring defense at 75.7 ppg. The Vulcans are second in the conference in turnover margin (+3.86), and are third in 3-pointers made per game (9.4).       
  • The contest will feature two of the top five scorers in the PSAC, with Cal's Brent Pegram third at 20.1 ppg. and the Boro's Anthony Coleman ranking fifth at 19.4 ppg.  Coleman got hot late to finish with 23 points vs. UPJ, the redshirt senior guard's sixth 20-point effort this season.  He adds5.8 rpg. and has made 31-of-72 3-pointers.  He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Backcourt mate Jaryn Simpson adds 15.3 ppg. and 5.9 rpg., both figures second on the team, along with a team-high 49 assists. He ranks third in assists in the PSAC.  He has also made 28-of-71 3-pointers. The 6'3" junior guard had his best game of the season vs. West Chester, scoring 27 points and handing out seven assists. He followed that up with his second double-double of the season on Wednesday vs. UPJ with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  He was a second team All-PSAC West honoree a year ago after averaging a team-high 18.0 ppg. He made 76-of-210 3-pointers a year ago. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Trey Staunch is the third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 13.4 ppg. and a team-high 7.3 rpg. while shooting 56.0 percent from the floor (65-of-116), good for fifth in the PSAC. He had 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds vs. UPJ.The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, came off the bench until joining the starting lineup the last five games. He provides 9.8 ppg. Alex Jay comes in at 6.8 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.6 rpg. and has made 18-of-46 3-pointers.

  • Steven Freeman gave the Fighting Scots the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 3:12 remaining to go on top 69-68. He scored 11 points over the final 5:56. Edinboro relied heavily on its bench, whoich outscored Cal, 25-4.  Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures. Freeman contributed a season-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 6-of-9 free throws in 20 minutes off the bench. Turner Kurt finished with 17 points, just one point shy of tying his season-high. Trey Staunch posted his third double-double of the campaign with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Jaryn Simpson scored 13 points. Three Vulcans scored in double figures. Collin MacAdams scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, to go with nine rebounds. Brent Pegram added 20 points and Zyan Collins contributed 18 points. Ike Okwara came off the bench to collect 11 boards.
HEAD COACH 
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-93, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm and has a 78-88 record, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.           
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.  
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING CAL U
  • Danny Sancomb is in his second season as the head coach at Cal after previously coaching at Wheeling Jesuit. He has already led the Vulcans to more wins than they posted in 2018-19, when they finished 8-19. Cal has a 9-5 record and is 5-3 in the PSAC West. They are riding a two-game winning streak, with wins over Slippery Rock and Shepherd, the latter coming on Wednesday, 74-61. Junior Brent Pegram, a 5'11" guard, was a second team All-PSAC West selection  a year ago after averaging 18.5 ppg. He stands third in the PSAC in scoring at 20.1 ppg. He leads the Vulcans in 3-point field goals (45-of-117), assists (63), and steals (32). He is second in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (3.2), while ranking fifth in assists and first in steals. Zyan Collins, a 6'4" sophomore, is next in scoring at 15.4 ppg., adding 5.1 rpg. Luke House contributes 14.1 ppg., 5.5 rpg., and gas made 35-of-91 3-pointers. He is a 6'4" freshman swingman. Philip Alexander, a 6'6" redshirt sophomore, gives the Vulcans a fourth double figure operative at 10.3 ppg. and has made 20-of-42 3-pointers. Jermaine Hall Jr. is the team's top rebounder at 7.5 rpg. He's a 6'4" sophomore.
