THE GAME STORIES
  • When Edinboro and Clarion met the first time in January, both teams came in riding losing streaks. Clarion would snap its seven-game skid with a 93-81 win at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro's, meanwhile, has now extended to 11 games, tied for the longest in school history. The Golden Eagles followed that with a second straight win vs. Bloomsburg, but have now dropped five games in a row as the two look to once again snap losing streaks. The Clarion game is the second of back-to-back road games for the Fighting Scots.
  • Edinboro has been done in by late-game runs by opponents in recent games. That was the case on Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown. That, and cold shooting. The Fighting Scots trailed 52-49 at the half and were still down just 73-66 midway through the second half.  UPJ would outscore Edinboro, 25-7, the rest of the way, as the Scots went scoreless the final five minutes. Edinboro would shoot just 27.8 percent in the second half in the 98-73 loss. That left the Fighting Scots at 5-15 overall and 2-14 in the PSAC West. Clarion suffered an 86-44 loss at Mercyhurst to fall to 4-19 and 3-14, respectively.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while Clarion was voted ninth.  Edinboro is averaging 70.3 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and are 16th in the PSAC in scoring defense at 84.0 ppg. Clarion is 18th in the conference in scoring at 64.6 ppg., along with standing 12th in scoring defense at 75.9 ppg.
  • The trio of Anthony Coleman, Jaryn Simpson, and Trey Staunch combine for over two-thirds of Edinboro's scoring.  Coleman leads the way at 17.7 ppg., although Staunch leads the team with 291 points. The 6'4", 285 lbs. forward is the only player to start all 20 games, as head coach Pat Cleary has used several different lineups, some due to injuries.  Coleman missed five games and Simpson two.
  • Coleman, a 6'3" guard, returned a week ago. He comes in averaging 17.7 ppg. with 36 3-pointers in 94 attempts. He is ninth in the PSAC in scoring. In addition, he adds 5.5 rpg.  He has had six games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Simpson adds 15.2 ppg. and is tied for third on the team in rebounding at 5.1 rpg. He also leads the Scots with 74 assists and 19 steals, and has made 46-of-134 3-pointers, which leads the team.  He is fifth in the PSAC in 3-pointers per game (2.6), and sixth in assist per game (4.1).  In the first meeting with Clarion, he scored a career-high 38 points, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Staunch has been the biggest constant for Edinboro during its losing streak. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 14.6 ppg. and a team-high 7.5 rpg. while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor (107-of-201), good for fourth in the PSAC. The big man displays a soft touch at the charity stripe, ranking second in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 88.5 percent (77-of-87). Staunch has scored in double figures the last 12 games, and has had three double-doubles in the last eight games. He muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Turner Kurt has scored in double figures in three of the last six games while boosting his scoring average to 7.0 ppg.  The 6'8" sophomore recently had a career-best effort at Slippery Rock, scoring 22 points. He tied a career-best with five 3-pointers. He has made 22-of-73 3-pointers.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, adds 8.7 ppg. and has started 11 contests.  Alex Jay comes in at 5.5 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.1 rpg. and has made 22-of-68 3-pointers. Anthony Allen (2.5 ppg., 3.6 rpg.) has seen increased playing time of late, and the 6'8" senior made his first career start against Gannon. In the previous game at Mercyhurst, he scored a career-high 11 points.

LAST MEETING
January 17, 2020 – Clarion 93, Edinboro 81 at Edinboro, Pa.

  • Jaryn Simpson scored a career-high 38 points in a game that was moved up a day due to an impending winter storm. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead and forced the Fighting Scots to play catch-up most of the night. Clarion would take a 47-39 lead into the half while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor (17-of-33), including 5-of-10 3-pointers. Simpson was able to keep the Fighting Scots within striking distance as the junior guard dropped in 22 points in the first 20 minutes, making 8-of-10 field goals. Edinboro pulled to within three at 47-44 early in the second half, but Clarion responded with nine straight points. A Trey Staunch layup and Simpson's three-point play cut the gap to seven at 56-49, but the Fighting Scots would pull no closer than that the rest of the way. With leading scorer Anthony Coleman missing the game with an injury, Simpson turned in a career-best performance. He made 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers and was 7-of-7 at the line to finish with 38 points. Staunch registered a double-double with an 18-point, 14-rebound effort. Turner Kurt came off the bench to contribute 11 points, making 3-of-5 3-pointers.
