THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro looks to snap a lengthy losing streak against a Cal team that has lost two straight games to the PSAC West's top two teams, but prior to that ran off eight wins in the previous nine games. Edinboro's has dropped 12 straight games and is 5-16 overall and 2-15 in the PSAC West. Cal comes in at 15-8 and 11-6 respectively, holding down the fourth spot in the Western Division.
  • Edinboro has been done in by late-game runs by opponents in recent games. That was the case the last two games at Pitt-Johnstown and at Clarion. The Fighting Scots trailed 52-49 at the half and were still down just 73-66 midway through the second half.  UPJ would outscore Edinboro, 25-7, the rest of the way, as the Scots went scoreless the final five minutes. On Wednesday at Clarion, Edinboro trailed by a point at 71-70 with just over a minute to play, but Clarion scored the final eight points of the game.
  • The Fighting Scots are looking to snap out of an extended shooting slump. They have shot less than 40 percent in four straight games and 10 of the last 12 contests. Edinboro is shooting 39.7 percent from the floor for the season.
  • Edinboro is averaging 70.3 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and is 17th in the PSAC in scoring defense at 84.4 ppg. Cal is fifth in the conference in scoring at 81.8 ppg., along with standing ninth in scoring defense at 75.0 ppg.
  • The trio of Anthony Coleman, Jaryn Simpson, and Trey Staunch combine for over two-thirds of Edinboro's scoring.  Coleman leads the way at 17.9 ppg., although Staunch leads the team with 311 points. The 6'4", 285 lbs. forward is the only player to start all 21 games, as head coach Pat Cleary has used several different lineups, some due to injuries.  Coleman missed five games and Simpson two.
  • Coleman, a 6'3" guard, returned recently and comes off his top scoring effort since his return. He dropped in 20 points at Clarion to boost his average to 17.9 ppg., good for eighth in the PSAC. He adds 5.4 rpg. and has made 38 3-pointers in 103 attempts. He has had seven games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Simpson adds 15.0 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounding at 5.1 rpg. He also leads the Scots with 76 assists and 20 steals, and has made 47-of-140 3-pointers, which leads the team.  He is sixth in the PSAC in 3-pointers per game (2.5), and seventh in assist per game (4.0).  In the first meeting with Clarion, he scored a career-high 38 points, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Staunch continues to enjoy an outstanding season. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football has scored in double figures in the last 13 games after dropping in 20 points against Clarion. The 6'4", 285 lb. forward added 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double. He is averaging 14.8 ppg. and a team-high 7.7 rpg. while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor (116-of-217) and 88.8 percent (79-of-89) from the free throw line. Staunch ranks second in the PSAC in free throw percentage, fifth in field goal percentage, and seventh in rebounding. He muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Anthony Allen has taken advantage of extended playing time of late. The 6'8" junior has started the last three games and in the last five games has set career highs for points and rebounds. He scored 11 points against Mercyhurst, and on Wednesday, pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds at Clarion. He comes in with modest averages of 2.6 ppg. and 4.1 rpg., but over the last five games he is averaging 7.0 rpg. and has also blocked seven shots.
