THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro got off to a fast start in 2019-20 with four straight wins, but has fallen on hard times of late. The Fighting Scots come in with a 5-18 record and are 2-17 in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst, meanwhile, is a team on a roll with six straight wins to improve to 16-7 and 14-5, respectively. The Lakers posted a 73-64 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday to move past the Mountain Cats into second place in the Western Division.
  • Saturday is Make-A-Wish Day for Edinboro.  Edinboro has annually been among the top Division II institutions in the country in Make-A-Wish donations, and that was the case again in 2018-19. The Fighting Scots will host a wish reveal at halftime of the men's basketball game and will have a variety of fundraising activities during the day.
  • Edinboro is averaging 70.0 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and is 17th in the PSAC in scoring defense at 84.8 ppg. Mercyhurst is 12th in the conference in scoring offense (73.9 ppg.), but the Lakers lead the conference in scoring defense (63.0 ppg.).
  • After playing football for four years, Trey Staunch is using his final year of eligibility while playing basketball for a third season. The 6'4", 285 lb. offensive tackle-turned-POWER forward is enjoying an outstanding campaign. On Wednesday, Staunch scored a career-high 30 points at eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.), making 13-of-18 field goals. He added 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double. He is one of only two players in the conference in the top 17 in scoring and top four in rebounding, along with Shippensburg's John Castello. He has scored in double figures in the last 15 games. He boosted his averages to 15.3 ppg. and 7.9 rpg., and ranks third in the PSAC in field goal percentage (55.0 pct.) and free throw percentage (97.0 pct.).  Staunch is the only player to start all 23 games.
  • Jaryn Simpson averages 14.6 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounding (5.1 rpg.) and leads the team with 84 assists and 27 steals. He has also made a team-high 49 3-pointers in 153 attempts. Simpson is sixth in the PSAC in assists per game (4.0) and ninth in 3-pointers per game (2.4). In the first meeting with Clarion, he scored a career-high 38 points, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well
  • Anthony Coleman has missed six games this season, but in the 17 he has played in he has a team-high 16.5 ppg. average. The 6'3" senior adds 5.4 rpg., second on the team, and has made 40-of-110 3-pointers. He has had seven games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • One of the other bright spots this season has been the development of Anthony Allen. The 6'8" junior has started the last five games and in the last six games has set career highs for points and rebounds. He scored 11 points against Mercyhurst, and in the second meeting with Clarion pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds. He comes in with modest averages of 2.8 ppg. and 4.2 rpg.
  • Turner Kurt is averaging 6.1 ppg. despite being hampered the last couple games by an injury. The 6'8" sophomore has started nine games and recently had a career-best effort at Slippery Rock, scoring 22 points. He tied a career-best with five 3-pointers. He has made 22-of-79 3-pointers.

  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.

  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
  • A year ago, Mercyhurst got hot late and ended up winning the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional and almost and upsetting eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State in the Elite Eight. Now head coach Gary Manchel is hoping his team can duplicate that run. The Lakers have run off six straight wins, beginning with a 93-56 win over Edinboro, after defeating Pitt-Johnstown, 73-64, on Wednesday. That victory moved Mercyhurst past UPJ into second place in the PSAC West. The Lakers are 16-7 overall and 14-5 in the conference. Manchel faced a major rebuilding job after losing four starters. Always a balanced team, the Lakers have three double figure scorers. Miykah McIntosh, a 5'11" sophomore, leads the way at 13.8 ppg. He is one of seven players with 18-or-more 3-pointers. He has made a team-high 47 3-pointers in 117 attempts. He adds 50 assists. Cameron Gross, a 6'5" junior forward who previously played at Wabash Valley CC, adds 10.3 ppg. along with a team-high 5.7 rpg. He is shooting 51.6 percent from the floor (83-of-161) and has made 19-of-47 3-pointers. Zach McIntire comes in at 10.2 ppg. with 29 3-pointers in 65 attempts. He is a 6'5" junior guard. Joel Ufele (Jr., 6'9") is also averaging 5.7 rpg. along with averaging 7.2 ppg. Michael Bradley, a 6'0" freshman who is the only player to start all 23 games, leads the Lakers in assists (82) and steals (38) while averaging 9.1 ppg..
