THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro got off to a fast start in 2019-20 with four straight wins, but has fallen on hard times of late. The Fighting Scots come in with a 5-19 record and are 2-18 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock, meanwhile, has won three straight games after Saturday's 78-68 win at Gannon. That leaves The Rock at 14-12 overall and 10-10 in the PSAC West. SRU has clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament, and is still alive for the fifth seed. With two players out due to the flu, and a couple others at less than 100 percent, Edinboro suffered an 89-69 loss vs. Mercyhurst on Saturday.
  • Wednesday is Senior Night, with Edinboro recognizing five seniors in pre-game ceremonies. They include Anthony Allen, Anthony Coleman, Steven Freeman, Daylon Harris, and Trey Staunch.
  • Edinboro is averaging 70.0 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, and is 17th in the PSAC in scoring defense at 85.0 ppg. Slippery Rock is 13th in the conference in scoring offense (73.4 ppg.), and SRU ranks ninth in the conference in scoring defense (74.5 ppg.). Traditionally one of the top rebounding teams in the PSAC, Slippery Rock currently ranks third (+5.0).
  • Trey Staunch joined the men's basketball team following his sophomore season of football in 2017-18. After earning All-PSAC West honors in football as a senior, he is having an all-conference caliber season in basketball. The 6'4", 285 lb. offensive tackle-turned-POWER forward is enjoying an outstanding campaign. A week ago, Staunch scored a career-high 30 points at eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.), making 13-of-18 field goals. He added 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double. He has scored in double figures in the last 16 games while boosting his averages to 15.2 ppg. and 7.8 rpg. He ranks third in the PSAC in field goal percentage (54.5 pct.) and free throw percentage (87.3 pct.).  Staunch is the only player to start all 24 games. He will likely fall just short of 1,000 career points, currently with 934 points in 75 games.
  • Anthony Coleman has accumulated 804 points in just two seasons and 51 games. The senior has missed six games this year, but is averaging 17.4 ppg. The 6'3" guard adds 5.3 rpg., second on the team, and has made 42-of-114 3-pointers. He has had eight games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Jaryn Simpson averages 14.4 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounding (5.1 rpg.) and leads the team with 88 assists and 27 steals. He has also made a team-high 49 3-pointers in 157 attempts. Simpson is seventh in the PSAC in assists per game (4.0). In the first meeting with Clarion, he scored a career-high 38 points, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well. Simpson is up to 882 career points in 77 games.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, made his first start in the last six games after scoring 15 points at IUP on Wednesday. He is averaging 8.6 ppg.  Alex Jay comes in at 5.3 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 4.5 rpg. and has made 23-of-76 3-pointers.  Jay has started 16 games this season and Harris 12.
  • Turner Kurt is averaging 6.2 ppg. The 6'8" sophomore has started nine games and had a career-best effort in the first meeting at Slippery Rock, scoring 22 points. He tied a career-best with five 3-pointers. He has made 24-of-82 3-pointers.

LAST MEETING
January 25, 2020 – Slippery Rock 79, Edinboro 73
  • Edinboro went toe-to-toe with Slippery Rock in a game that turned out to be a typical Edinboro-Slippery Rock affair. Eight of the last 11 meetings have been decided by six points or less. Edinboro would lead for much of the first half before SRU went on a 12-2 run to take the lead. Turner Kurt's 3-pointer with 23 seconds left pulled the Fighting Scots to within 38-37 at the half. The two teams went back and forth early in the second half, with the lead changing hands five times. Another Kurt three gave the Fighting Scots a 47-45 lead less than three minutes into the half. SRU followed with a 20-4 run that coincided with Trey Staunch forced out of the game with a minor injury. The Scots found themselves trailing 65-51, their largest deficit of the game, with 10:36 remaining. Thanks to an 18-5 burst, the Fighting Scots pulled to within a point at 70-69, with Kurt leading the way. The 6'8" sophomore made it 70-66 with his fifth 3-pointer of the game. He would make one-of-two free throws, then added a drive to make it 70-69 with 2:46 remaining. Unfortunately, Slippery Rock proved too much down the stretch. The Fighting Scots played without leading scorer Anthony Coleman for the fourth straight game, and regular starter Jay saw limited action due to an injury. Kurt stepped into the starting lineup for the first time since early December and scored a career-high 22 points, with 16 coming in the second half. He had scored 31 points in the previous seven contests. He made 8-of-16 field goals, tying his career high with five 3-pointers in 11 attempts. Staunch finished with 18 points (6-of-11 FGs, 6-of-6 FTs) and seven rebounds. Jaryn Simpson was also in double digits with 17 points, 15 coming in the first half. The junior guard added five assists. Micah Till led all scorers with 27 points along with seven rebounds. Will Robinson added 20 and Amante Britt finished with 13.
HEAD COACH
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-105, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING SLIPPERY ROCK
  • Slippery Rock has clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament and still has a chance to claim the fifth seed with two games remaining. The Rock has run off three straight wins, including a 78-68 win at Gannon on Saturday. That left SRU at 14-12 overall and 10-10 in the PSAC West. Second-year head coach Ian Grady had to do without All-PSAC West performer Micah Till for the first semester. The Rock got off to a 4-4 start without the 6'7", 250 lb. redshirt senior. Till has played the last 18 games and is averaging a team-high 18.6 ppg., along with 6.6 rpg. The latter figure stands second on the team. While playing in just 70 career games, Till has moved into fifth place in career scoring with 1,437 points, along with pulling down 699 career rebounds. A year ago, Till averaged 21.0 ppg. and 10.0 rpg. Will Robinson Jr. adds 17.8 ppg. The 6'5" senior via McNeese State adds a team-high 7.7 rpg. and has made 104-of-127 free throws. Jared Armstrong, a 5'10" senior, is third on the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg. He has made 41-of-95 3-pointers. Amante Britt, a 5'10" sophomore, is the team's playmaker. He has 83 assists and 34 steals, both team highs.
