THE GAME STORIES
  • Two teams riding losing streaks hook up in the final game of the 2019-209 campaign, looking to end the year with a victory. Edinboro comes in with a 5-20 record and is 2-19 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill has a 4-21 record, with seven straight losses, and is 3-18 in conference play. The Griffins won the first meeting between the two in January, 86-75
  • Edinboro is averaging 69.6 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC, and is 18th in the PSAC in scoring defense at 85.4 ppg. Seton Hill is 17th in the conference in scoring offense (65.1 ppg.), and ranks 12th in the conference in scoring defense (77.8 ppg.).
  • Edinboro's five seniors – Anthony Allen, Anthony Coleman, Steven Freeman, Daylon Harris, and Trey Staunch -- were recognized prior to Wednesday's final home game vs. Slippery Rock.  Staunch then went out and turned in another strong effort against an imposing Slippery Rock front line. He finished with 23 points, his 17th straight game in double figures, scoring 23 points. Staunch joined the men's basketball team following his sophomore season of football in 2017-18. After earning All-PSAC West honors in football as a senior, he is having an all-conference caliber season in basketball. The 6'4", 285 lb. offensive tackle-turned-POWER forward is enjoying an outstanding campaign. He has recorded seven double-doubles and is averaging 15.5 ppg. and 7.7 rpg. He ranks second in the PSAC in field goal percentage (55.1 pct.) and free throw percentage (88.1 pct.).  Staunch is the only player to start all 25 games. He will likely fall just short of 1,000 career points, currently with 957 points in 76 games.
  • Coleman turned in an 18-point effort against SRU and has accumulated 822 points in just two seasons and 52 games. The senior has missed six games this year, but is averaging 17.5 ppg. The 6'3" guard adds 5.5 rpg., second on the team, and has made 43-of-120 3-pointers. He has had eight games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Jaryn Simpson averages 13.8 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg.) and leads the team with 92 assists and 28 steals. He has also made a team-high 49 3-pointers in 159 attempts. Simpson is seventh in the PSAC in assists per game (4.0). In the first meeting with Clarion, he scored a career-high 38 points, making 13-of-25 field goals, including 5-of-10 3-pointers, and 10-of-10 free throws, for his third career 30-point effort. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, Simpson averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. he set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well. Simpson is up to 884 career points in 78 games.
  • Harris, a 6'5" senior, is averaging 8.6 ppg. and has made 20-of-81 3-pointers. Turner Kurt, a 6'8" sophomore, adds 6.0 ppg. with 24 3-pointers in 83 attempts, while Alex Jay comes in at 5.1 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 4.3 rpg. and has made 23-of-77 3-pointers.  Jay has started 16 games this season, Harris 12, and Kurt nine.

LAST MEETING
January 22, 2020 – Seton Hill 86, Edinboro 75
  • A depleted Edinboro men's basketball team made repeated runs at Seton Hill after
  • falling behind early, but the Fighting Scots were never able to catch up. Edinboro played its third straight game with leading scorer Anthony Coleman, and Anthony Allen was out due to illness. Several other players hobbled off during the game, but would return. The Fighting Scots were unable to slow down Seton Hill's leading scorer, Nathan Davis. The senior guard finished with 34 points, the most by an opponent this year. He matched his season average of 18.5 ppg. while leading the Griffins to a 31-14 lead with just over ten minutes to play, scoring 18 points. The Fighting Scots came alive late in the half to pull with six points at intermission at 43-37. That was as close as Edinboro would get, however, as Anthony Karabatsos buried back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by an old-fashioned 3-point play in the span of just over two minutes. Karabatsos had gone scoreless in the first half. His personal 9-0 run gave the Griffins a 73-58 lead and Edinboro would get no closer than ten points the rest of the way. Jaryn Simpson and Trey Staunch led Edinboro with 20 points apiece. Both enjoyed strong nights at the charity stripe, with Simpson making 10-of-12 and Simpson 8-of-9. Staunch was 6-of-8 from the floor and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. He added five assists. Harris was also in double figures with 18 points, making 8-of-12 field goals. Davis made 11-of-20 field goals, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, and was 7-of-7 at the line to finish with 34 points for Seton Hill. Chimaobu Ezekwesili added 19 points and 11 rebounds, with Karabatsos totaling 11 points and seven boards.
HEAD COACH
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-106, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
