Noah Shettel Senior Spotlight

Men's Track and Field Bob Shreve, Sports Information Director

Senior spotlight -- Noah Shettel, Men's Track & Field

With the coronavirus pandemic canceling spring sports, senior members of the spring sports missed their opportunity to enjoy their final seasons. That may change depending on NCAA plans, but in the meantime the Edinboro athletic department would like to pay a small tribute to the seniors of spring.

We posed a few questions to the seniors. Our second senior spotlight is Noah Shettel, a member of the men's track & field team. Noah is a three-time qualifier for the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in the triple jump, and was denied a chance at a fourth trip. We will continue to highlight senior members of our spring athletics teams in the coming days. Here's Noah's responses, along with the link to his bio on our website.

NOAH SHETTEL BIO

Name: Noah Shettel

Major: Film (Technically it's a BFA in applied media arts with a concentration in Cinema... but just call it film because it's easier)

When Will You Graduate?  Spring 2020

What are your future plans?  Hopefully, once the outbreak of Covid19 blows over, gigs in film industry in Pittsburgh will pick back up again. I currently have a job as a junior technician at a rental house (a place that rents digital cinema cameras, as well as lighting and grip equipment to commercial, film, and tv productions) in Pittsburgh. It's a great job out of college to gain experience with high level gear where I can also meet face to face with local producers and directors who then may hire me to work on set (I've gained a few gigs from it so far actually). After the "movie season" in Pittsburgh ends, I'll be moving out to California where there are more jobs in the film industry. Luckily, some Edinboro grads have moved out there already and the people I work with will be able to connect me to other industry members. My plan is to work my way up the ladder from a production assistant onto a union grip and electric crew (those are the people who set up the lights and rig cameras and whatnot) to becoming a union a gaffer or chief lighting technician, while also doing non-union cinematography on the side until I acquire enough hours to join Local 600 (the international cinematography union) as a cinematographer. From there, I would like to become a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Really though, I plan to shoot for the moon and land amongst the stars.

What will be your greatest memory of Edinboro University?  My greatest memory of Edinboro University probably comes during the winter break of my junior year (before the spring 2019 semester). We had decided to stay in Edinboro to work on my friend Sal's short film. He was a senior at the time, and I wanted to work with the seniors on his personal project, unencumbered by the weight of the bureaucracy that comes with a class project. The hardest working students in the department put their heads down and made something we could all look back fondly on. Sal and I have gotten each other various gigs. He's brought me on to some productions and I got him a position at the rental house. In the film industry it is not, by any means, about what you know; it's all about who you know. The degree is simply a piece of paper validating 4 years of hard work and a small pile of student loan debt. Edinboro has forced me to work hard every day because I do not wish to languish in mediocrity, instead I strive to work as hard as I possibly can, making mistakes and learning from them, but also showing everyone along the way I am a hard worker. Those who have done the same with the film program at Edinboro are an even smaller part of the small major, but we know who we are and we know who to call when there is crew to fill on a paid project.

The NCAA is considering adding an extra year of eligibility for seniors who missed their spring season. What are your thoughts on that? Would you take advantage of an additional year of eligibility?  Although it will not be a while until I go to graduate school (if I even go), I have always liked the idea of being the "old guy" on the team. The unfortunate thing is that if I go to grad school, it will probably be to USC or UCLA, and Division 1 has an age clock (let alone standards to make the team). However, I could be easily persuaded to do track for one season somewhere and then transfer to USC. If anyone can find me a Division 2 school with a master's program related to film production. I did ask Coach Anne (Cleary) for a redshirt for the season so that I could be the 30-year-old man with a kid or two, jumping into the sand one last time.
