Fighting Scots Ready to Make Initial Appearance in Mid-American Conference Championships

MATCH STORYLINES
  • The Edinboro wrestling team will make its first-ever appearance at the Mid-American Conference Championships after previously competing in the Eastern Wrestling League since 1988-89. The seven Eastern Wrestling League members became affiliate members of the MAC last summer. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • The 15 teams will converge on DeKalb, Illinois as Northern Illinois hosts the 2020 MAC Championships.  Missouri seeks its eighth straight MAC title since joining the conference in 2013. Missouri finished with 180 points, easily outdistancing second place Buffalo (113.5 points). Central Michigan finished third with 112.5 points, and Old Dominion was fourth with 11 points. The Tigers are the top-ranked team in the latest MAC coaches' poll.  Central Michigan and Rider are tied for second, with Lock Haven, last year's EWL champion, fourth.  Edinboro is tied for seventh place with Clarion. A year ago, the Fighting Scots finished fourth at the EWL Championships.   
  • Edinboro dominated the EWL Championships for many years. The Fighting Scots won 15 EWL titles, and at one stretch won eight in a row and 12 in 13 years.       
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Jacob Oliver is looking to make a return appearance to the NCAA Division I National Championships. The redshirt sophomore finished second at the EWL Championships a year ago at 174 lbs. He would drop both of his matches to finish at 28-7 in his first season as the starter.  Oliver went on to be named the EWL Freshman of the Year and the PSAC Division I Freshman of the Year. He is currently the top pre-seed at 174 lbs. and has a 22-4 record. 
  • Edinboro opened the 2019-20 campaign with a 29-6 win over Kent State to pick up its first-ever win as a member of the Mid-American Conference. The Fighting Scots would win their second MAC?dual, 25-7, over Ohio, and also claimed a 19-16 win over Bloomsburg this year.  
NCAA ANNOUNCES QUALIFIER ALLOCATIONS FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS  
  • The NCAA?has announced the qualifier allocations for the NCAA?Division I?National Championships. The Mid-American Conference will receive 41 automatic qualifiers.  That includes two at 165 lbs., three at 125 lbs. and 184 lbs., four at 174, 197, and 285 lbs., five at 133, 141, 149, and six at at 157 lbs., and six at 157 lbs.  NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying weight will be awarded based solely on place-finish. Edinboro has three wrestlers showing up in the rankings coaches and/or RPI rankings. Jacob Oliver has climbed to 14th at 174 lbs. in the coaches' poll, along with 24th in the RPI rankings. The redshirt sophomore was Edinboro's lone representative at last year's national championships. He currently has a 22-4 record and has won 12 straight matches. Junior Jon Spaulding is ranked 24th at heavyweight in both polls. He has won 14 of his last 18 bouts to improve to 24-8 on the season. In addition, Dylan Reynolds is ranked 30th at 197 lbs. in the RPI rankings. The redshirt senior has a 17-11 record.
FIVE FIGHTING SCOTS EARN PRE-SEEDS FOR MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS   
  • The MAC pre-seeds were announced following a conference call of the MAC's 15 head coaches on Tuesday. Each weight class will feature a 16-man bracket with a double-elimination format. The MAC will release the final 2020 MAC Wrestling Championships bracket on Friday, March 6. Edinboro has five wrestlers listed in the pre-seeds of the ten weight classes. The conference tournament will serve as the qualifier for the upcoming NCAA Division I National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. on Thursday, March 19-Saturday, March 21. The NCAA has allocated 41 automatic qualifiers for the MAC.
