East Lansing, Mich. – The Edinboro wrestling team opened their 2021-22 season with three Fighting Scots earning a spot on the podium at the Michigan State Open.
In the Open Division,
Jonathan Spaulding posted a fifth-place finish at 285. In the opening round, Spaulding earned a 22-7 tech fall over Blake Querio of Michigan. Spaulding dropped his quarterfinal match 3-1 in sudden victory against Josh Heindselman of Oklahoma.
Back-to-back decisions in the consolation bracket moved Spaulding to the consolation semifinals where he fell 4-1 to Luke Luffman of Illinois.
Also wrestling in the open division of 285,
Max Millin went 2-2 on the day with one of his losses coming to Spaulding in the third round of consolations.
At 197,
Cody Mulligan also went 2-2 earning a second-round win via 8-2 decision over Central Michigan's Cade Dallwitz. After falling 5-1 in the quarterfinals, Mulligan majored Trent Tracy of Cal Poly 13-1.
Wrestling a 165, PJ Gohn finished 3-2 with a trio of decisions before bowing out in the fifth round of consolations.
Alex Garcia posted a 2-2 record wrestling at 157.
Ryan Burgos picked up a pair of falls at 149 as he went 2-2.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division,
Logan Jaquay had a strong showing at 125 finishing in third. Jaquay opened with a fall over Jeremy Sarter of Michigan State. After dropping a quarterfinal decision 9-5, Jaquay won four straight matches including a pair of pins to earn his spot on the podium.
Also earning a third place spot was
Dylan Kohn. Kohn advanced to the semifinals with a pin of Ronald Solis and an 8-5 decision. After dropping his semifinal match to Caleb Fish of Michigan State, Kohn posted a 3-1 decision over Gavin Model of Wisconsin and a 16-1 tech fall over Oklahoma's Thatcher Hall.
Zachary Soda went 3-2 at 125 including a fall.
Sully Allen added a 2-2 mark at 149.
The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host the University of Pittsburgh at McComb Fieldhouse. Wrestling is slated to start at 7 p.m.
