WSOC | PREVIEW | Fighting Scots prepare for PSAC quarter-final against Mercyhurst University

EDINBORO, PA - Edinboro (9-8) will face Mercyhurst (13-4-1) in the PSAC quarter-final on Tuesday, Nov. 9, kickoff 1 p.m. at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. The game will be the third meeting between the two teams this season, Edinboro winning the first contest 2-1, the reverse fixture saw Mercyhurst take victory 2-1 in overtime.

  • Edinboro will be seeded fourth for the tournament after they secured their playoff berth against Pitt-Johnstown
  • Edinboro ended their regular season with a 9-8 overall record, their final game saw Seton Hill win 3-2 in overtime
  • Brittnie Spithaler scored her fifth goal of the season which made her the outright scoring and points leader (12) for the regular season
  • The Fighting Scots were victorious in the first meeting against Mercyhurst this season. 2-1 winners thanks to Brittnie Spithaler scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, and Morgan Wissner doubled the lead in the 75th minute.  A late consolation goal in the 88th minute was scored by Mercyhurst's Amata Valentini
  • Anna Voelker had a standout game in the first contest with eight saves from nine shots on target
  • Edinboro were unlucky in the second game to lose 2-1, they had outshot the opponent 18-9
  • Edinboro will look to previous PSAC success against Mercyhurst as motivation for this encounter. Edinboro were 2-1 winners in 2019 which saw them head to the PSAC final four, both Edinboro goals coming from Danielle Chatten

Mercyhurst Lakers

  • Mercyhurst will host the PSAC quarter-final after securing the number one seed for the West
  • Mercyhurst ended their season in fine form, unbeaten in their last six games. Their final game of the season saw a 3-0 win over California (Pa.), Emily Majares scored a brace with Lauren Casey adding the third
  • Emily Majares leads the scoring and points table for Mercyhurst, scoring 14 goals with two assists to take her total to 30 points
  • The Lakers were 2-1 winners thanks to overtime in the previous meeting on Oct. 8 with Edinboro. Lauren Casey put Mercyhurst ahead in the first minute of the game. Mary Sinan found an equalizer with just five minutes remaining in the game. Amber Thomas scored the winning goal in the 15 minute of overtime from a quick free kick
