Fairmont, W.Va. -- The Edinboro men's basketball team will to travel Fairmont State University for a weekend-long tournament to begin their 2022-23 regular season. On Friday night at 6 pm, the Scots will play against host Fairmont State. On Saturday, they will take on Glenville State College at 3pm.
The Fighting Scots
Edinboro enters their 2022-23 campaign led by head coach Pat Cleary. Cleary is in his eighth season with the Fighting Scots and will look to surpass 100 career wins this year as he currently sits at 89.
Last season the Fighting Scots capped off a (9-17) overall record and just missed postseason contention by one spot. In a recent preseason poll released by the PSAC, Edinboro was selected eighth overall in the Western side of the conference.
Edinboro will bring back seven players from last year's roster including two starters in graduate student Kierell Green and senior Dominique Keyes. Green's season was cut short due to injury, but in five games he averaged a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds per game. Keyes returns for his senior season looking to continue his dominance down-low at the center position. In twenty games last season, Keyes averaged 11 points and nine rebounds per game.
Sophomore Will Taylor will look to make a splash in year two with potential starting minutes up for grabs. As a freshman, Taylor came off the bench and averaged 14 minutes per game while playing in 23 games.
Junior Jack Gallagher will look to fill the holes of the Scot's backcourt that opened after the graduation of Jaryn Simpson and Deontae Robertson. Gallagher enters his third year with Edinboro after playing in 21 games last season and averaging almost 12 minutes per contest.
In the offseason Edinboro brought in some key transfers including senior Naim Miller, Junior Harlyn Owens and junior Rashon Barron.
When asked by JET24 Sports about the upcoming season Keyes explained how the team has improved in the preseason "We've worked on really sharing the ball a lot more and getting a lot more shots up, that's our big thing". Miller added "we practice hard every day, try to be attentive, always have attention to detail, make shots and just play hard".
