Clarion, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team had seven place winners headlined by
Jared McGill winning the 174-pound weight class at the Clarion Open on Sunday.
McGill opened the tournament with an 11-1 major decision over Kaedee Barger. In the second round, he earned another major decision this one 12-2 over Chase Cordia of Clarion.
In his quarterfinal match, McGill blanked Purdue's Brody Baumann 6-0. He would then top Sammy Starr of Navy 6-3 to advance to the final. In the final, McGill built an 8-0 lead into the second period before John Worthing of Clarion bowed out with a medical forfeit.
Edinboro had a pair of third-place finishers in
Ryan Burgos at 149 and
Luke Kemerer at 157.
Burgos came out of the gate fast scoring falls in each of his first two matches. He pinned Kalen Laffey of Pitt in 4:09 and then followed that with a fall over Mason Myers in 5:43.
The bonus points continued in the quarterfinals as Burgos topped Trey Cruse of Purdue 10-1. In the semifinals, Burgos battled but fell in a 7-4 decision to Tyler Badgett of Pitt. After advancing without a contest, Burgos fell behind Blake Saito of Brown 3-0 before scoring 10 straight earning a 10-3 decision and taking third.
Kemerer started his day with an 8-2 decision over Brayden Johnson before earning a 14-4 major decision over Gardner-Webb's Corbin Dion.
In the quarters, Kemerer posted a 3-2 decision over Dylan Evans, but fell by that same 3-2 score to Nate Camiscioli of Purdue. In the third-place match, Kemerer was a 9-6 winner over Sam Mcmonagle of Brown.
The Scots had one fourth-place winner in
Aiden Lewis at 125. Lewis started off with a 10-8 decision over Nick Calello of Kent State. He followed that up with a 12-7 decision over Dayton Delvisicio of Navy. Lewis advanced in the quarterfinals with a 12-0 major of Matthew Rowland of Gardner-Webb.
Lewis dropped a 4-1 decision to Colton Camacho of Pitt and then fell in the third-place match, 16-5, to Jax Forrest.
Amonn Ohl placed sixth at 141 after dropping his first match of the day. In his first consolation match, Ohl needed just 1:12 to pin Trevor Nugent. He then topped Casey Wilkes of Kent State 13-7. Ohl advanced via medical forfeit before falling 11-0 to Brown's Justin Bierdumpful and going down via fall in the fifth-place match to Luke Lucerne of Navy.
Ethan Ducca and
Kade Sottolano each tallied eighth place finishes at 184 and 285 respectively.
Ducca opened with a 7-1 decision over Derek Yingling and followed that with a 10-3 victory over Maryland's Anthony Bradley. He dropped a 6-1 decision to Reece Heller of Pitt, but won his first consolation match 12-6 over Hunter Johns of Navy. He fell to 13-4 to David Key of Navy before a no contest put him in eighth.
Sottolano decisioned Joshua Boggan of Kent State in his first match of the day before slipping into the consolation bracket.
He defeated Logan Shepherd of Bucknell 6-2 and fell to Tristan Ruhlman of Purdue and had a no contest in the seventh-place match to finish eighth.
Cameron Soda, wrestling at 141, won his first two matches 6-0 over Michael Lewarchick of Kent State and 5-4 over Sean Pitts of Pitt before bowing out with two medical forfeits.
Alex Garee ended the day with a 2-2 record. He dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Eli Brinsky of Clarion in the opener before winning 7-6 over Immanuel Kerr-Brown. Garee followed that with a 9-4 decision over Ayden Miller of Clarion and fell 18-5 to Pitt's Jared Keslar to end his day.
The Edinboro wrestling team is back in action next weekend when they travel to the Appalachian State Open next Saturday.
