Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team battled No. 17 Oklahoma to the final bout before falling 22-15 in the first home dual of the 2022-23 season at McComb Fieldhouse Saturday night.
At 125,
Aiden Lewis held a 4-3 lead late in the third, but No. 10 Joey Prata recorded a last second takedown to earn the 5-4 decision and give Oklahoma a 3-0 lead.
Cam Soda found himself down 10-3 after an explosive first period from Wyattt Henson. Soda fought back with a take down in the second and a reversal to start the third cutting the lead to 11-7. Soda would pick up a stall point with 27 second left, but Henson held on to push the Sooner lead to 6-0.
The bout at 141 saw the Scots get on the board in a big way. There was no shortage of points in the bout that lasted just 1:35. The Scots
Amonn Ohl scored a takedown 16 seconds in before Mosah Swartz counted with a reversal before Ohl regained control to make it 4-2. Swartz scored another reversal and two near fall points before Ohl returned the favor taking an 8-6 lead. After a Swartz escape and take down Ohl appeared to be in trouble before working up and earning the fall knotting the match at 6-6.
At 149,
Ryan Burgos found himself behind early when Mitch Moore scored a pair of first period takedowns and two near fall points to lead 6-1 after one. Burgos was the aggressor on top riding Moore for the entire second period and picking up a stall point in the process. Burgos was able to score a reversal in the third, but came up short in a 6-4 decision.
After a scoreless first period,
Luke Kemerer grabbed the first lead of the 157-pound bout with a takedown at the 1:22 mark. Jacob Butler scored a pair of escapes to force the match to sudden victory. Kemerer picked the ankle and completed the takedown just 17 seconds into sudden victory to tie the dual 9-9 with his 4-2 decision.
Gerrit Nijenhuis put the Sooners back on top earning a fall over
Alex Garee in 52 seconds to make the score 15-9 Oklahoma.
At 174,
Jared McGill outlasted No. 13 Darrien Roberts. The wrestlers entered the third period scoreless but McGill had built two minutes of riding time in the process. He needed just eight seconds to get out earning the escape and would add a takedown and the riding time bonus point to take the 4-0 decision.
Tate Picklo earned a 3-1 victory over Edinboro's
Jack Kilner at 184 on the strength of a first period takedown to extend the Sooner lead.
The Scots also picked up a decision from 197 pounder
Cody Mulligan. Mulligan scored a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead after one. He added two near fall points in the second before Seth Seago escaped to make it 4-1 after two. Mulligan tacked on an escape and takedown in the third to close out the match with an 8-2 decision.
Oklahoma would get an 18-6 major from No. 19 Josh Geindselman over
Nick Lodato to hold off the Scots and take the dual.
The Scots are back in action on Jan. 14 when they host Cleveland State at 7 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
