Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team had a strong showing at the Bobby Kaufman Open with five place-winners including a trio of champions Sunday at McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots got first-place finishes from
Ryan Burgos (149),
Jack Kilner (184) and
Cody Mulligan (197).
Logan Jaquay was second at 133 and
Max Millin was fourth at 285.
Burgos opened his tournament with a fall over Brady Worthing in just 47 seconds. He topped Ohio State's Klay Reeves 10-0 in the quarterfinals.
In the semis, Burgos took on Kolby Depron from Bucknell. Burgos scored a pair of takedowns, but gave up two escapes and a takedown to leave the first tied 4-4. Depron scored a reversal to take a 6-4 lead after two. Burgos chose neutral to start the third and scored a takedown to tie the bout. Depron scored an escape, but Burgos scored the takedown with eight seconds left to take an 8-7 decision. In the finals, Burgos gave up the first takedown to Willie McDougald of Oklahoma, but escaped and scored a takedown of his own to hold a 3-2 advantage after one. McDougald tied the score with an escape in the second and Burgos set the final, 4-3, with an escape in the third.
At 184, Kilner scored the only takedown of his opening match against Charlile Heydorn of Ohio as he earned the 3-2 decision. In the semifinals, Kilner blanked Buffalo's Gilbert Marquez 3-0 earning a stall point during a ride out in the second and then scored an escape to start the third and picked up the riding time bonus point. In his final match, Kilner help a 2-1 lead over Patrick Cutchember of Clarion. Kilner took a 3-1 lead with an escape to start the third. Cutchember scored a takedown, but Kilner immediately scored the reversal to make it 5-3 after two. Cutchember escaped to start the third, but Kilner scored a takedown and picked up the riding time bonus to win 8-5.
Mulligan dominated his opening match at 197 scoring a 10-2 major decision over Braydon Vandenberg of Buffalo. He continued to roll in the quarter finals pinning Joey Lyons of Cleveland State in the first period. In the semifinals, Mulligan scored a takedown in each period and one escape to top Riley Godek of Bucknell 7-0. Mulligan finished the open with another shutout earning a 4-0 decision over Eli Sheeren of Buffalo.
Jaquay came out of the gate flying earning back-to-back falls over Jordan Villareal of Pitt and Paul Woo of Ohio to advance to the semifinals. He continued earing bonus points in the semis scoring a 10-2 major decision over Dan Adams of Cleveland State. In the finals, Jaquay led 7-6 after two, but Cole Minnick of Buffalo scored a takedown and gave Jaquay the escape to send the match to sudden victory. Minnick scored a takedown 1:03 into the extra session to win 9-7.
Millin opened his day with a 4-0 decision over Justin Jaeckin of Cleveland State. He dropped a 5-3 decision to Logan Shephard dropping to the consolation bracket. In the wrestlebacks, Millin topped Robbie Unruh of Buffalo 8-3 and then majored Mason Cover of Cleveland State 11-1. He moved to the third place match via medical forfeit. In the third place match, a second period takedown was enough for Nolan Neves of Blair Academy to take the 4-2 decision.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they host Cleveland State at 7 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
