Football Travels to Gannon for PSAC West Contest

Erie, Pa. -- The Edinboro football team makes the short trip to Erie Saturday afternoon to take on PSAC West foe Gannon in a 12 p.m. kickoff at McConnell Family Stadium.

The Series
The Scots lead the all-time series againts Gannon 10-6.

Edinboro Last Time Out
The Fighting Scots improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West with a 40-24 victory over Mercyhurst last week at Sox Harrison Stadium. 

Edinboro posted a season-high 266 yards on the ground and the defense pitched a second-half shutout to score the victory. Brian Trobel carried the ball 25 times for a team-leading 140 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Carlisle added 19 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown those totals despite two sacks. Carlisle also completed 10-of-17 passes for 116 yards and a score. Toby Cline led the defense with a pair of interceptions as well as five tackles and a pass break up. CJ Waldier posted a team-high eight tackles.

Honor Roll
Cline gave the Fighting Scots their third straight appearance in the PSAC West Weekly Awards being named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. Cline intercepted a pair of Laker passes while also breaking up a pass in the end zone and recording five tackles in the win.

Reed Martin is the other Scot to earn PSAC West honors this season earning Special Teams Athlete of the Week honors for his performances against Bloomsburg and Cal.

Hidden Yards
On the season Martin is averaging a PSAC-best 43.6 yards per punt which ranks 10th in Division II. 

The Scot coverage team has held opponents to just 1.33 yards per return ranking 18th in the nation. The Scots net punting is a PSAC-best 41.1 yards per punt ranking sixth in the country.

Takeaways
The Edinboro defense leads the PSAC with five fumble recoveries ranking 15th in the nation. The Scots have forced nine turnovers on the season.

After starting the season with a -5 turnover differential against Duquesne, the Scots have been a +5 against Division II opponents on the year. 

Ground Attack
Edinboro did their work offensively against the Lakers on the ground. The Scots piled up 266 rushing yards going over 200 team rushing yards since going for 215 against Clarion on Nov. 2, 2019. 

Both running back Brian Trobel and quarterback Matt Carlisle rushed for over 100-yards on Saturday. They were the first Edinboro duo to surpass 100 yards since Walter Fletcher and Kyle Galyk did so on Oct. 20, 2018 against Seton Hill.

Brian Trobel Scores a Hat Trick
Trobel found the end zone three times on the ground against the Lakers. He became the first Scot to do so on the ground since Sept. 18, 2021. Trobel is one of just eight players in the PSAC to score three times in one game this season.

Trobel now ranks 16th in the nation and second in the PSAC in rushing touchdowns with six. He is just one behind Chris Collier of Lock Haven for the league lead.

A Rare 2-Pointer
The Scots also picked up their first safety of the Jake Nulph era when a snap on a Mercyhurst punt sailed out the back of the end zone.

Making the Stops
CJ Waldier ranks third in the PSAC and 30th in the country in solo tackles per game with 5.0 per contest. His 8.4 tackles per game ranks 30th in Division II and fourth in the PSAC. 

Don't Call it a Comeback
Edinboro overcame a halftime deficit for the first time under Nulph erasing a 24-21 Mercyhurst lead at the break. The Scots wasted no time leveling the score after recovering an onside kick to start the second and holding the Lakers off the scoreboard for the entire second half. 

Offensive Expolosion
The Scots scored 40 points on Saturday reaching the 40 point plateau for the first time since scoring 47 against Clarion on Nov. 13, 2021.

Road Warriors
The Scots have been road warriors under head coach Jake Nulph. They have a 7-6 overall record and are 1-1 away from Sox Harrison Stadium this season.

Scouting Gannon
The Golden Knights moved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West with a 23-6 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday. Donny Marcus rushed for 186 yards and a touchdown to lead the Gannon offense. Nate Mikell was 12-of-31 for 198 through the air while also rushing for 28 yards and a touchdown. Eric Scarpino went 3-for-3 on field goals earning PSAC West Special Teams Player of the Week. Chris Farnsworth had a team-high six tackles while Charles Calhoun recorded a pair of sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. 

Marcus leads the rushing attack with 289 yards and a touchdown. Braxton Todd adds 144 and score. Mikell is 99-of-178bfo 1,166 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Donnell Mason has caught 25 pass for 419 yards and three touchdowns while Ke'John Baptiste adds 26 grabs for 286 yards and two scores. 

Defensively, Farnsworth has a team-leading 37 tackles with 22 being solo. Obi Ezeigbo adds 26 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss including 4.5 sacks.
