Clarion, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team placed three wrestlers in the season opening Clarion Open Sunday afternoon inside Tippin Gymnasium.
Landon Bainey and
Colton Camacho each earned fourth-place finishes while
Brody Evans was sixth for the Fighting Scots.
"I think that we showed our depth and determination today," said head coach
Matt Hill. "The intensity and effort showed a marked improvement from last year and I am proud of how we represented Edinboro against some tough competition and national powers."
Bainey started the day with a 9-1 major decision over Buffalo's Aidan Shufelt and followed that up with a first-period pin of Garett Lautzenhelser from Ohio State. In the quarterfinals, he earned a 5-4 decision over Shay Korhorn of Bellarmine. Bainey dropped his quarterfinal match 12-2 to Vinny Kilkeary of Ohio State and rounded out his day with an 8-1 loss to Matt Marlow from Pittsburgh.
Camacho brought his offense to the Clarion open defeating Kade Kluce from the Navy Wrestling Club with a fall at the 5:38 mark. He followed that up with a 20-4 tech fall over Jordan Villareal of Pittsburgh. In the quarters, Camacho picked up a 20-11 major decision over Clarion's Scott Johnson. Camacho dropped an 18-5 major to Ohio State's Ben Davino and closed out the day with an 11-10 loss to Joey Fischer.
Evans opened his day falling 4-2 to Dylan Schell of Buffalo. After a bye, Evans scored a 9-1 major decision over Liam Kilrain of Navy. He then met another Midshipman in Sammy Star posting a 4-1 decision. Evans kept his run going with a 7-3 victory over Michigan's Joshua Knudten. His wrestleback run came to a close with a 7-3 loss to Rafael Knapp of Buffalo.
Several other Scots has solid showings with
Colin Roberts and
Garrett McChesney each going 3-2 while
Chris Vargo,
Max Kirby and
Ryan Michaels all finished the day 2-2.
The Scots return to the mat on Saturday at the Michigan State Open. Wrestling is set to start at 9:30 a.m.
