Philadelphia – The Edinboro men's wrestling team placed seven wrestlers on the podium at the Keystone Classic hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Jared McGill was the top finisher for the Scots at 184 pounds. He opened the tournament with a 15-7 major decision over Wyatt Ferguson of Central Michigan. In the quarterfinals, McGill scored a 19-4 tech fall over Ryan Boucher of Michigan State. The Fighting Scot gutted out a 2-0 decision over Shane Cartagna-Walsh to advance to the final. McGill dropped a 10-3 decision to Franklin & Marshall's James Conway placing second.
A trio of Fighting Scots earned third at the Classic:
Chris Vargo,
Jacob Brenneman and
Tate Geiser.
Vargo began his run with a 13-0 major decision over Jackson Parker of Franklin & Marshall. Leading 9-1 in the third period, Vargo turned Curtis Nelson of Lock Haven scoring a fall in 5:52. In the semifinals, Vargo dropped a 14-8 decision to Davis Motyka of Penn. Vargo bounced back in the third-place match defeating Franklin & Marshall's James Garcia 6-3 to secure third.
Brenneman scored a 5-4 win over Jordan Soriano of Drexel in his opener. In the quarters, Brenneman posted a 9-4 decision over Harvard's Dante Frinzi. In the semis, Brenneman fell 19-3 to Wyatt Henson of Lock Haven. In the third-place match, Brenneman defeated Nick Blackburn of Central Michigan.
Geiser opened his day with a 20-5 tech fall over Benjamin Smith of Harvard. Geiser defeated Lance Urbas of Penn 4-2 in the quarters. Rutger's Lenny Pinto scored a 20-3 teach over Geiser sending the Scot to the third-place match. In that match, Geiser scored a takedown in sudden victory to score the 4-1 decision.
Ryan Burgos placed fifth at 165. In the opening round match, Burgos scored a 17-2 tech fall over Jesse Scott of Franklin & Marshall. He dropped a 3-0 decision to Rutger's Andrew Barbosa dropping to the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match he notched fall over Michigan State's DJ Shannon. Burgos then teched Jake Slotnick of Hofstra 18-1. In the fifth-place match, Burgos notched a 13-5 major decision of Virginia Tech's Mac Church.
At 197,
Nick Lodato earned seventh place. He opened his day with a 4-2 victory over Hofstra's Will Conlon. In the quarters, Luke Cochran scored a 14-2 major decision over Lodato. In his first consolation match, Lodato notched a 6-0 decision over Penn's Jackson Zimmerman. In the consolation semis, Martin Cosgrove of Penn notched a 16-1 tech to send Lodato to the seventh-place match. Lodato finished the day with a 10-1 major over Franklin & Marshall's RJ Moore.
