Burgos Leads Fighting Scots at Michigan State Open

Lansing, Mich. – Ryan Burgos brought home first-place honors at 165 with three other wrestlers placing at a successful Michigan State Open on Saturday.
 
Burgos came out of the gates fast scoring a 16-1 tech fall including a 10-1 first period against Caden Jacobs of Grand Valley State. Burgos kept the fast start going needing just 54 seconds to pin Cam Adams of Michigan State to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Burgos trailed Ohio State's Ethan Birden 14-7, but scored a fall with 37 seconds remaining to advance to the final. Burgos took down Carson Miller of Kent State in the first period and scored an escape in the third to take a 4-0 decision.
 
Tate Geiser began his day with a wild 14-13 shootout with Ethan Barr of Kent State. In the quarterfinals, he found another MAC foe in Nicholas Marienfeld of Central Michigan. Geiser used a pair of third period takedowns to secure the 7-2 decision to advance to the semifinals. Geiser held a 2-0 lead over Arizona State's Leo Tukhlynovych, but the Sun Devil scored a pair of third period takedowns to claim a 7-5 decision. In the consolation semis, Geiser was a 10-4 winner of Mason Alessio of Central Michigan. In the third-place match, Geiser saw Marienfeld again this time scoring a 20-4 tech fall to claim third-place.
 
Amonn Ohl had a strong showing at 133 in a crowded field. He started his day with a 15-0 tech fall over Luclan Brink of Northern Illinois. In the quarterfinals, Ohl fell behind Andrew Hampton of Michigan State 3-2 after one, but outscored the Spartan 5-1 in the third to claim a 7-4 decision. Ohl dropped a 21-3 tech fall to Jackson Blum of Indiana in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Ohl was leading 11-5 before scoring the fall before time expired over Indiana's Blaine Frazier. Massey Odiotti of Northwestern scored a fall over Ohl in the third-place match putting Ohl in fourth.
 
Jacob Brennamen was the fourth Scot to place in the Open Division. He started the day with a fall of Evan Herriman of Michigan State in 6:46. In the quarterfinals, Brennamen dropped an 8-0 major decision to Kellan Aure of Central Michigan. Brennamen scored a major decision of his own in his first consolation match winning 14-3 over Charles Curtis of Northern Illinois. In the consolation semis, Brennamen dropped a 7-1 decision to Michigan State's Jaden Crumpler. Brennamen bounced back in the fifth-place match defeating Landen Duncan of Kent State 7-6 to place fifth.
 
The Scots also had four wrestlers place in the Freshman / Sophomore Division. Chris Vargo led the way winning the 125-pound weight class. Vargo came out scoring earning an 18-1 tech fall over Ruben Pina-Lorenzana of Kent State. In the quarters, Vargo blanked Purdue's Ty Henderson 8-0. Vargo earned a 13-7 decision over Michael Esteban of Michigan State to advance to the final. In the finals, Vargo again picked up bonus points with a 16-7 major decision over Archer Anderson of Central Michigan to claim the title.
 
At 149, Dominic Ferraro finished fifth. He had a rough start to the day as Cooper Hilton of Michigan scored the first period fall. Ferraro bounced back in his first consolation match scoring a fall of his own in just 54 seconds over Logan Trenary of Northern Illinois. He dropped a touch 2-1 decision to Hunter Sturgill of Indiana on riding time in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Ferraro found his offense defeating Landon Thomas 13-8.
 
Garrett McChesney was sixth at 157. He picked up a 6-4 decision over Braylenn Aulbach of Grand Valley State in his first match of the day. In the quarterfinals, McChesney claimed a 3-1 decision in the tiebreak. In the semis, McChesney dropped a tough 6-4 decision to Tyler Turzinski of Northern Illinois. McChesney held a 4-1 lead heading to the third, but the Husky scored a late takedown to earn the decision. In the consolation semis, Northwestern's Gunnar Myers defeated McChesney 17-9 and Arizona State's Jabari Hinson scored a 5-3 decision over McChesney giving the Scot sixth place. Tyson Clear was also sixth at 184.
 
The Scots open dual action on Sunday November 16 when they host VMI at 1 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
