McGill Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships; Eight Scots Still Alive at MAC Championships

Trenton, N.J. – The Edinboro wrestling team sits in sixth place with one finalist after the first day of the MAC Championships inside the CURE Insurance Arena.
 
Jared McGill took on Colin Fegley from Lock Haven in the quarterfinals. After a scoreless first, McGill took a 1-0 lead with an escape seven seconds into the period. He would take that 1-0 lead into the third period. Starting on top, McGill scored four near-fall points to go up 5-0. Fegley scored an escape and added a stall point to cut the advantage to 5-2. McGill claimed the riding time point to take the match 6-2.
 
McGill advanced to the final with a 7-0 victory over Malachi DuVall of George Mason. McGill got on the board with a takedown 40 seconds in. McGill made it 5-0 in the second with a reversal. A stall point made it 6-0 McGill after two. The riding time point set the final.
 
Three other Scots reached the semifinals. Colton Camacho turned in bonus points in both of his first two matches. In his opening match, Camacho needed just 3:45 seconds to pin Geoffrey Whelan of George Mason. It was another fall for Camacho in the quarterfinals. He trailed Nick Molchak of Cleveland State 7-5 after the first period and cut the lead to 7-6 with an escape in the second. After an escape from Molchak, Camacho scored a takedown and stuck Molchak in 6:11.
 
In the semifinals, Camacho dropped a 12-1 major decision to top-seeded Anthony Noto of Lock Haven. Camacho drops to the consolation semifinals on Saturday morning.
 
Anthony Ferraro started his day with a 4-0 decision over Branden Palcko of Rider. In the quarterfinals, Ferraro upended Jordan Decatur of Kent State. Decatur scored the first takedown just 28 seconds in. Ferraro escaped to cut the lead to 3-1 after the first. Ferraro escaped to start the second and then scored a takedown go ahead 5-3. Decatur escaped in the third, but Ferraro held off the Decatur push to take the 5-4 victory.
 
In the semifinals, Ferraro dropped a 12-6 decision to Central Michigan's Andrew Austin slipping to the consolation semifinals.
 
At 165, Max Kirby started his day with a 12-8 decision of Jack Lledo of Ohio. In the quarterfinals, Kirby and Ethan Barr of Kent State were tied at 6-6 heading to the third. Kirby scored 10 points in the third period to score the 16-10 decision. In the semis, Kirby dropped a 9-4 decision to top-seeded Enrique Munguia of Rider.
 
Chris Vargo started the day with a 13-2 major decision over Grant Stahl of Central Michigan. Vargo held a 6-0 lead after two and then scored seven points to pull away. In the quarters, Vargo dropped a 7-5 decision to Drew Davis of SIUE. In his consolation match, Vargo scored a fall over Lock Haven's Branden Wentzel.
 
Ryan Michaels started the day with a bye and advanced to take on top-seeded Sammy Alvarez. Michaels held a 5-4 lead after a takedown with 32 seconds left in the third. Alvarez scored an escape in the final seconds to force sudden victory. With 2 seconds left in sudden victory, Alvarez scored a takedown to claim the 8-5 decision. Michaels came back in his consolation match scoring an 18-3 tech fall over David McClelland of Clarion.
Ryan Burgos dropped his first match of the day to Kaleb Burgess of Buffalo. In his first consolation match he topped Cleveland State's Douglas Terry 13-3 for a major decision. Burgos followed that up with a first-period fall over Nicholas Stampoulos of Lock Haven.
 
Aden Roe shutout Rider's Collin French with a 12-0 major decision in his first match. Roe dropped a 5-1 decision to Jordan Greer of Ohio in the quarterfinals. In his consolation match, Roe scored an 8-0 major decision over Tyler McCatharn of Bloomsburg.
 
Wrestling resumes on Saturday at 11: 30 a.m. with the consolation quarterfinals. The Finals start at 3 p.m.
