Wrestling Finishes Third at MAC Championships; Hill Named Coach of the Year

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling squad scored 97.5 points to take third at the MAC Championships on Sunday. Head coach Matt Hill was named the conference Coach of the Year.
 
After Jared McGill punched his ticket to the NCAA championships on Saturday, Colton Camacho won a pair of matches to finish third and earn his spot at National Championships.
 
"We had a great weekend here at MACs," said coach Hill. "The guys stepped up and believed in what coach [AJ] Schopp and I have been preaching all year. I'm very proud of this squad top to bottom. Going from 12th to 3rd and having two NCAA qualifiers is exceptional and I'm proud of our Fighting Scots."
 
In the consolation semifinals, Camacho and Will Betancourt of Rider wrestled a scoreless first period. In the second, Camacho escaped 19 seconds in to grab a 1-0 lead. Betancourt scored a takedown with 19 seconds left in the period, but just 8 seconds later Camacho scored a reversal to send the match to the third tied 3-3. Betancourt chose the down position to start the third and Camacho rode him out to claim the riding time point and the 4-3 decision.
 
In the finals, Camacho met Markel Baker of Northern Illinois. Baker scored a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Camacho scored the reversal and then put Baker on his back scoring the fall in 2:17 to punch his ticket to NCAAs.
 
Jared McGill took on Rider's Isaac Dean in the 184-poiund final. Each wrestler scored an escape sending the match into sudden victory. With 38 seconds left in sudden victory Dean was able to score a takedown and gained a penalty point for a 5-1 decision.
 
Anthony Ferraro also advance to the third-place match at 141. In his consolation semifinal match, Ferraro held a 5-0 led when he stuck George Mason's Dominic Hargrove for a fall in 5:52. In the third-place match, Danny Martinez of SIUE defeated Ferraro 11-0 to close out the tournament.
 
At 149, Ryan Michaels defeated Collin Arch 14-5 to advance to the consolation semifinals. With a spot in the third-place match on the line, Michaels scored a takedown of Ohio's Derek Raike with 38 seconds left in the third to secure the 5-2 decision and advance to the third-place bout. Against George Mason's Kaden Cassidy, Michaels trailed 4-2 heading to the third. With 52 seconds left in the match he scored a reversal to knot the score 4-4. Cassidy managed to escape with 17 seconds remaining to secure a 5-4 decision.
 
Ryan Burgos started his day in the consolation quarterfinals scoring bonus points with a 10-1 major decision over Bloomsburg's Willaim Morrow. In a tightly contested consolation semi with SIUE's Eric Almarinez, each wrestler scored an escape, but Burgos earned the riding time point for a 2-1 victory. In the third-place bout, Burgos dropped a 12-6 decision to Landen Johnson of Northern Illinois.
 
Chris Vargo turned on the offense in the consolation quarterfinal against Max Elton of Buffalo. Two takedowns and four near-fall points put Vargo up 10-1 after the first. An escape in the second and a takedown in the third gave Vargo a 14-1 major decision. Vargo dropped a 2-0 decision to Ben Monn of Geroge Mason moving him to the fifth-place match. Against Kent State's Tyeler Hagensen, Vargo turned up the offense again scoring four takedowns on his way to an 18-1 tech fall.
 
At 285, Aden Roe earned a 2-0 decision over Bryson Buhk riding out the SIUE wrestler in the third. In the consolation semis, Daniel Bucknavich of Cleveland State defeat Roe by fall in 1:11.
 
The Scots will return to action with McGill and Camacho traveling to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 20.
