University Heights, Ohio -- The Edinboro women's wrestling team took the mat for their inaugural competition Nov. 2 at the John Carroll University Round Robin.
"You only get to be the First one time and as important as yesterday was for our University it is equally as important in the landscape of Women's wrestling and athletics," said head coach
Ryan Cook. "We had the opportunity to share the mats with 4 other programs that were also competing for the first time! Yesterday was a very exciting day for the wrestlers, staff and university. Our wrestlers represented themselves and our program very well at the John Carroll Round Robin. Both of them recorded wins and did so in dominate fashion, we have some great data points to work on for us to improve as a team and individuals."
Braylin Jones competed at 138 and opened the Round Robin with a loss via fall to Siena Palmisciano of Baldwin Wallace. In her second match, Jones held a 5-0 lead, but a big move from Nora Mooney of John Carroll led to a fall. Jones secured the first win for a Fighting Scot women's wrestler when she jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Calista Binning of Waynesburg and scored the fall in 2:04. Jones picked up another win in the fifth-place match getting to her offense and gaining a 9-0 lead before scoirng a fallover Mireya Garcia of Bethany.
"Braylin is a great competitor, and her 1st win for our program will always be memorable," said Cook. "She will have many more as a Fighting Scot that will be just as important."
In the 160-Blue Division, Heidi Gordon made her Edinboro debut. Gordon took on Melina Gorgas of Ithica in her opener going down via fall in 2:35. She dropped a fall to Eden Knight in her second match. In the Blue Divsion third-place match, she scored an 11-0 teach fall over Hope Howard of Purdue Club to claim her first win as a Scot.
"Heidi's consistent effort led to drastic improvements," said Cook. "That win for her was huge step for her and an example of what our program can accomplish."
The Scots return to the mat on Sunday when they travel to Millersville.
