The Game Story

-Edinboro evened its record at 2-2 as the Fighting Scots snatched victory from the jaws of defeat last weekend on Long Island.  Trailing LIU Post 24-17 with just 31 seconds remaining, the Fighting Scots prayers were answered with a 41-yard Hail Mary pass to Devin Ghafoor, and on the next play Cody Harris completed a 12-yard TD pass to Marcus Johnson with just three seconds remaining.  the same pair hooked up in overtime for a 20-yard TD pass to win the game.

-It's Homecoming at Edinboro.  The Fighting Scots are 36-32-2 all-time in Homecoming games, but saw a four game winning streak snapped a year ago with a 24-23 loss to Slippery Rock.  This marks the third time Edinboro has hosted Gannon for Homecoming, with the Fighting Scots prevailing 40-3 in 2008 and 13-0 in 2010.

-Edinboro owns a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series, including shutouts the last two games.  Edinboro won 27-0 a year ago and 13-0 in 2010.  The first meeting took place in 2001.

-The Edinboro-Gannon game will be telecast on a tape-delayed basis by the SPORTSfever Television Network.  The game can be seen on several cable systems, including ROOT Sports out of Pittsburgh on Wednesday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m.   It is the first of three games that will be shown by the SPORTSfever Television Network.

-Edinboro is in its seventh season under head coach Scott Browning.  The former long-time Boro assistant has led the Fighting Scots to a 47-25 record during that period, and tied mentor Tom Hollman for the most wins by a coach in his first six seasons.  A year ago Edinboro finished with a 7-4 record for the second straight season.

-The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West preseason poll, while Gannon was chosen sixth.
After playing three of its first four games on the road, Edinboro now has back-to-back games at Sox Harrison Stadium and three of its next four at home.

-Edinboro returns six starters on offense and six on defense.  The offense is led by second team All-PSAC quarterback Cody Harris, who is in his third year as a starter.  Senior tight end Shawn Walker was a second team All-PSAC West pick in 2010.  Defensively, junior James Jackson was a 2011 first team All-PSAC West selection at cornerback and senior Branden Williams earned the same honor in 2008 and '09.  Jackson is a third team Beyond Sports Network preseason All-American.

-Edinboro faces an ambitious 2012 schedule.  The PSAC crossover slate has the Fighting Scots facing the top three teams from last year in the Eastern Division in Kutztown, Bloomsburg and LIU Post.  The three combined to go 27-8.  Throw in the usual Western Division rivals such as preseason favorites California(Pa.) and Indiana(Pa.), plus local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst, and Edinboro has its work cut out in 2012.

-Edinboro leads 6-0

-2011 -- Edinboro 27, Gannon 0

The Coaches
-Scott Browning (Ohio State '81)  took over as Edinboro's 13th head coach on January 5, 2006, and in his first six seasons he tied the record for most wins by a coach during that period.  Browning is now in his seventh season with a 47-25 record, tying former mentor Tom Hollman for most wins in the first six seasons.  He was certainly no stranger to Fighting Scot football, however, serving as an assistant coach for the previous twenty years. While at Edinboro he has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator.  Browning became the first head coach at Edinboro to debut with a win since Bill McDonald in 1969 when the Fighting Scots opened the 2006 season with a 28-14 win at West Chester.  He went on to lead Edinboro to a 6-5 finish, the most wins ever by a first-year coach.  That was followed by a 7-4 finish in 2007.  His next two Fighting Scot editions recorded a school-record tying nine wins.  in 2008 Edinboro ended the year at 9-2 and was ranked 20th in the final AFCA Top 25.  The Fighting Scots had a 9-4 record in 2009, making the NCAA playoffs for the first time in his tenure.  Edinboro would end the year 24th in the AFCA?poll.  The Boro has posted back-to-back 7-4 finishes in 2010 and 2011.

-Brad Rzyczycki (Mercyhurst '95) was hired as Gannon's head coach on May 3, 2012.   However, he is no stranger to area football, as he was a four-year starter at cornerback for Mercyhurst and most recently served as Gannon's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator the last five seasons.  He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Mercyhurst, working there for seven seasons as a defensive assistant.  Prior to arriving at Gannon he served in the same role at Kentucky Wesleyan for four years.  He also served as the wide receivers and special teams coordinator at Saginaw Valley State for a season.

-Bloomsburg 43, Gannon 24  -- Gannon looked poised for an upset over the 10th-ranked Huskies, leading 24-21 in the third quarter, before Bloomsburg rallied to score the final 22 points.  The Golden Knights took the lead on a Liam Nadler to Abraham Ocasio seven-yard TD pass early in the third quarter, but the Knight offense went stagant after that, with five of the final six possessions three-and-outs.  Bloomsburg scored on the ensuing drive to take the lead for good, and would add a touchdown later in the third quarter and another early in the fourth.  Nadler continued his outstanding play, completing 30 of 46 passes for 289 yards with 3 TDs and an INT.  Justin Caliste caught 10 passes for 74 yards, while Joe Sobucki caught 6 passes for 80 yards and a TD.  Bloomsburg entered the game ranked third in Division II in yards rushing and total offense and finished with 483 yards rushing and 579 yards in all.
