CLARION, Pa. – Edinboro snapped a three-game winning streak in impressive fashion on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, riding a career-best day by Cody Harris to a 48-13 win at Clarion.  The Fighting Scots improved to 4-5 overall and finish at 3-4 in the PSAC West.  Clarion fell to 4-6 and 2-5, respectively.

After two relatively sub-par outings in which he was constantly under pressure, Harris was given the time to throw today, and he took full advantage of it.   The junior completed 25 of 33 passes for 460 yards and 5 TDs.  The latter two figures are both career highs.  He added a sixth touchdown on a five-yard run.  The 460 yards is the second-highest single-game total, topped only by his brother Trevor's 630 yards against West Liberty in 2009, and the five TDs tied the school record.  Harris added 14 yards rushing for 474 yards in total offense,

Harris wasn't the only Boro player to enjoy a big day.  Ben Eisel posted career-high numbers with 9 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.  Marcus Johnson, who was a game-time decision to play due to an injury, added 4 catches for a career-high 143 yards and a touchdown.  The last time Edinboro had two receivers with 100 yards was the playoff game against West Liberty in 2009.  Johnson was involved in that, as well, with 126 yards.

The game didn't get off to a great start, as Clarion used its ground game to move from its own 30 to the Edinboro 33.  However, on 4th-and-3 Ben Fiscus was stopped for no gain by Bobby Kmetz.

The Fighting Scots would grab a 7-0 lead on their second possession, going 56 yards in seven plays.  After misfiring on his first pass, a play in which he actually should have been intercepted, Harris completed his final three pass attempts.  The last one was a 28-yard hookup with Kevin Sonnie, who caught a slant pattern at the 15 and outran the Clarion secondary.

Clarion would tie the game at 7-7 on the ensuing drive, going 69 yards in 10 plays.  The running game accounted for 42 yards, but the final 11 yards came on a pass from Fiscus to huge tight end Anthony Becoate with just one second remaining in the first quarter.

Edinboro broke the game open with 20 points in the second quarter, and scored 34 straight points to eventually take a 41-7 lead.  The Fighting Scots grabbed the lead for good on the first play of the second quarter.  Harris dropped back and found Johnson streaking down the right sideline.  He hit the junior in stride at the Clarion 25and completed a 62-yard touchdown play.  Sean Seefeldt's kick was blocked, giving the Scots a 13-7 lead.

Clarion would drive down to the Edinboro 19 on the next series, thanks in part to a fake punt that kept the drive alive.  Nathan Conway's 36-yard field goal attempt was wide right, however.

The Scots proceeded to put together a 12-play, 80-yard drive that covered 5 minutes, 23 seconds.  Three times the Scots were able to convert on third down, twice on hookups from Harris to Eisel.  Facing a 3rd-and-1 from the Clarion three, Jeremy Donaldson bulled his way in for his first collegiate touchdown with 3:43 left in the half.  The freshman was making his first career start at tailback after moving over from linebacker a week ago.

Clarion again moved into Edinboro territory and appeared ready to close the gap with the second quarter winding down. However, on fourth down from the Edinboro 23 Kenny Pettis pressured Fiscus into an incompletion.

Edinboro took over with 1:40 remaining, and that was more than enough to go 77 yards.  Even more amazing, the drive started with a holding penalty, moving the ball back to the 13.  D'Andrea Vaughn, making his first appearance of the game, turned in a 37-yard run for the second straight week, giving the Scots a first down at the Clarion 47.  On 3rd-and-1 Harris scrambled for a six-yard gain to the 32.

Four plays later the Scots were in the end zone, as Harris completed four straight passes.  A 17-yarder to Eisel gave the Scots a 1st-and-goal at the six.  On second and goal Harris found Shawn walker in the back of the end zone for a four-yard touchdown with five seconds remaining.

The Scots took the second half kickoff and looked poised to score following a 60-yard completion to  Johnson to the ten.  But on 3rd-and-goal his pass was intercepted in the end zone.

Clarion put together another impressive drive, but it ended on the 14th play.  Fiscus scrambled inside the ten before being hit byPettis, who not only forced the fumble but recovered it at the six.
Kenny Pettis

It took the Fighting Scots nine plays to cover the 94 yards, helped by a running into the punter penalty that kept the drive alive. The march also again featured a big play.  Sonnie hauled in a 52-yard pass from Harris on the very next play, carrying down to the Clarion 28.  Three plays later Harris and Johnson combined for a 12-yard gain to the 11, and on the next play Harris threw his fourth touchdown pass to Eisel.

The Scots were back in scoring territory moments later after Will Lowe intercepted a Fiscus pass and returned it 19 yards to the Clarion 27.  Harris scored four plays later to give the Scots a 41-7 lead with 1:44 left in the third quarter.

Clarion would answer immediately with a touchdown, as Fiscus completed three passes for 34 yards and then weaved his way through the Boro defense the final 28 yards for a touchdown with seven seconds remaining in the quarter.

Edinboro would tack on one last touchdown in the fourth quarter after Pettis intercepted a pass in the end zone.  This time it was Devin Ghafoor who did the honors, catching a 59-yard TD pass from Harris.

The Fighting Scots finished with a season-high 577 yards, with Clarion ending the day with 398 yards.   Vaughn led the ground game with 56 yards on just three carries, while Donaldson, in his first start on offense, had 28 yards on 14 carries.  Sonnie caught 3 passes for 90 yards and Ghafoor had 3 for 65 as nine different players caught passes.

For Clarion, Fiscus completed 17 of 32 passes for 209 yards with a touchdown and 2 INTs.  He added 82 yards on 11 rushes.  Chris Liberto led all rushers with 90 yard on 25 carries as the Golden eagles ran for 185 yards.  Becoate led Clarion receivers with 5 catches for 36 yards.

The bend-but-don't-break Edinboro defense featured Branden Williams with 9 tackles.  Pettis added 8 hits, an interception and a fumble recovery.  The senior free safety now has 98 tackles.

The Fighting Scots close out the 2012 campaign next Saturday, November 10 hosting Kutztown.  Kickoff is set for 12 noon.

BORO NOTES:  Cody Harris continued his climb up the record charts.  He has now thrown for 2,564 yards, the fourth-highest season total, and his 18 TD passes ranks ninth.  In season total offense he moved to fourth with 2,759 yards … Johnson moved into 12th place in career receiving yards, now standing at 1,492 yards … Edinboro must defeat Kutztown next Saturday to keep its streak alive of non-losing seasons that dates back to 2002 … the Scots have now won three straight and nine of the last ten against Clarion.
