EDINBORO, Pa. (Aug. 30, 2012) – The Edinboro women's soccer team opened its 2012 season in the way it played much of the 2011 campaign – by notching a shutout victory, blanking Notre Dame (OH), 2-0 at Sox Harrison Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Fighting Scots (1-0) held Notre Dame (0-1) to just four shots total for the game as part of a stifling defensive effort.
Edinboro got the scoring started as sophomore
Liz Debo took a pass from senior
Stephanie Tighe and put the Scots on the board in the 30
th minute. Tighe's pass found Debo behind the Falcon defense, leaving Debo to sail a shot from the five yard line over the head of goalie Christy Kolschetzky for the first score of the year.
“The first goal was very opportunistic,” Edinboro head coach
Gary Kagiavas said. “Steph cleared it and it went straight to Debo and she went in and scored.”
Before intermission, Edinboro added to its lead as sophomore
Lauralee Clements went far post off a pass from
Casey Rogozinski. The goal was Clements' first in an Edinboro uniform after starting 20 games last year on defense.
“Lauralee normally plays center back for us and we actually moved her into midfield in some preseason games,” Kagiavas said. “She's done really well for us there.”
That was enough as Notre Dame had just one solid scoring chance in the second half. Meghan Doraty slipped behind the Edinboro defense and sent a ball off the crossbar in the 56
th minute, but that would be the last true threat by the Falcons.
“We set a lot of high goals and if you don't win the nonconference games, it gets a lot tougher,” Kagiavas said. “I'm extremely excited about getting the first one in. Once you start building up momentum I think we'll be on a roll.”
Sophomore
Meghan Kelly recorded the shutout win in net while Kolschetzky had seven saves for Notre Dame. Edinboro outshot the Falcons 20-4. Tighe had three shots on goal, while
Karisa Fernandez had two and Dunlap one.
For the Scots, the shutout continues the trend from a year ago when Edinboro set the school record for blankings with 10.
“Defense is our strength,” Kagiavas continued. “Our defense is really good, really fast and athletic. I honestly think we can break that shutout record. That's the goal set by the goalkeeper and our defenders. They have the ability to be terrific. It's pretty exciting for us.”
The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday at Gannon against Lake Erie for an 11:30 a.m. start.
