The Match Stories
} Edinboro continues Eastern Wrestling League action with a pair of duals this weekend. On Friday night the Fighting Scots, ranked 15 in the latest USA?Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll, wrestle at 19th-ranked Bloomsburg in a showdown for first place in the EWL. Edinboro is 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the EWL. Bloomsburg has an 11-2 record and is 1-0 in league competition. Following Friday's dual the Fighting Scots head home to host Cleveland State in another EWL dual. The Vikings are 3-4 and 0-1, respectively.
} Note the special start time for the Cleveland State dual. The action will get underway at 8 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse, and will be preceeded at 6 p.m. by a high school match between Bellefonte and Greenville.
} The Fighting Scots come off a fourth place finish at the Virginia Duals, defeating Army (25-10) and 25th-ranked Old Dominion (21-12) before losing to tenth-ranked Virginia Tech (23-10) and ninth-ranked Central Michigan (25-10). The loss to Virginia Tech snapped a six-match winning streak. Edinboro is 7-3 overall, including a 28-12 win over Clarion and a 35-6 triumph last Saturday vs. Lock Haven in its two EWL duals.
} The Fighting Scots are tied for 16th in InterMat's Tournament-Strength Rankings and have climbed to 15th in the USA?Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll, which reflects dual matches.
} Edinboro owns a 19-5 advantage in the all-time Division I series with Bloomsburg, and has won the last seven meetings with the Huskies. That includes a 23-16 decision at Edinboro last year. The Fighting Scots are 21-5 all-time vs. Cleveland State, posting a 40-0 win in last year's dual. That marked Edinboro's seventh straight win in the series.
} Edinboro ended 2012 with an 11th place showing at the Midlands Championships, which featured 14 teams that finished in the top 25 at last year's NCAA?Division I National Championships. A pair of Fighting Scots placed fifth, with
A.J. Schopp picking up a fifth place finish for the second straight year at 133 lbs. and
Mitchell Port also picking up a fifth place. Three other wrestlers fell a win shy of earning medals --
Dave Habat and
Michael DePalma at 149 lbs. and
Ernest James at heavyweight.
} Edinboro made it back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in December, plus six in the last seven years. All ten Fighting Scots placed as Edinboro won its 15th overall PSAC?title. The Fighting Scots finished with 160.5 points to outdistance Clarion, who came in second with 140 points. Three wrestlers won their second straight individual titles --
A.J. Schopp (133 lbs.),
Mitchell Port (141 lbs.), and
Dave Habat (149 lbs.). Lock Haven finished fourth.
}The Fighting Scots showcase an extremely young lineup, with one true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen starting, plus four sophomores. Edinboro's lineup features four ranked wrestlers. Leading the way is
A.J. Schopp (133 lbs.), who is ranked third by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News and has a 22-2 record with 13 falls.
Mitchell Port is not far behind, ranked fifth in both polls with a 22-3 and ranked fifth in both polls. Both reached the round of 12 at last year's NCAA?Division I?National Championships.
Dave Habat (19-7) is ranked 15th in the Amateur Wrestling News poll and 16th in the InterMat rankings.
Ernest James (18-7) is ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20th by InterMat.
}Following this weekend's action, Edinboro does not return to competition until Sunday, February 10 when Kent State, ranked 19th by InterMat, visits McComb Fieldhouse. That is Edinboro's Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer Day, with proceeds benefiting the Grateful Patients, Grateful Hearts Research Institute for Cancer. Both teams will be wearing pink singlets, courtesy of Cradle Gear.
Scouting Bloomsburg
The Huskies are ranked 19th in the latest USA?Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll, showing an 11-2 overall record and 1-0 in the EWL, that a 19-18 victory over Pittsburgh. Bloomsburg also owns win overs Hofstra (24-10), Maryland (22-15), and Arizona State (18-16). The losses were to Lehigh (18-12) and Missouri (22-9). Coach John Stutzman's lineup has five ranked grapplers, led by two-time national qualifier Frank Hickman at 157 lbs. The fifth-year senior has an 18-3 record, giving him 93 career wins. He is ranked 11th by InterMat and 12th by AWN. A year ago he finished second at the EWL?Championships and won the PSAC?title, being named the Outstanding Wrestler in the process. Josh Veltre is ranked 12th by AWN and 13th by InterMat at 165 lbs. The junior is 24-5, and has split a pair of matches with Edinboro's
Johnny Greisheimer this year. Veltre won a 6-3 decision to win the PSAC?championship. Two weight classes will feature bouts between nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 133 lbs., Nick Wilcox comes in ranked 14th by AWN and 15th by InterMat with an 18-4 record. The junior lost to
A.J. Schopp in last year's PSAC?title bout. At heavyweight, Justin Grant, ranked 16th by AWN and 18th by InterMat, collides with
Ernest James. Grant is a junior with a 17-3 record and won the PSAC championship. Richard Perry is Bloomsburg's fifth ranked wrestler. The junior competes at 197 lbs. and has a 22-3 record. He was a national qualifier a year ago and led the Huskies with 33 wins.
Scouting Cleveland State
The Vikings come off a 21-16 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga last Sunday after losing to Lock Haven, 19-17, on Friday. Coach Ben Stehura's team is 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the EWL. Sophomore Matt Donohoe was recognized as the EWL?Wrestler of the Week after winning both of his matches at 157 lbs. last weekend. He boosted his record to 14-11. Ben Willeford leads the Vikings with a 17-12 record while competing at 125 lbs. A year ago he finished fifth at the EWL Championships. Michael Carlone has a 14-9 record at 133 lbs.
