EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 25, 2013) – Friday night's Eastern Wrestling League match between 15
th-ranked Edinboro and 19
th-ranked Bloomsburg was so close that it came down to criteria 3.15.1, total match points. The Huskies prevailed, 52-41, to claim a 19-18 win over the Fighting Scots at Thomas Field House. The loss dropped Edinboro to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the EWL, and also snaps a seven-match winning streak over the Huskies. Bloomsburg is now 12-2 and 2-0, respectively.
Both teams won five matches apiece, but it was a disappointing night for an Edinboro team that jumped out to 15-0 lead while winning the first four matches. Bloomsburg would rally to win five of the final six bouts, including critical swing matches at 165 lbs. and heavyweight.
The night got underway with
Kory Mines evening his record at 13-13 with a 6-3 decision over Sean Boylan (16-12) at 125 lbs. Mines led 2-1 after one period, with Boylan tying it with an escape in the second period. Mines opened the third period with a quick escape, then took the lead with his second takedown with 1:04 remaining. Boylan escaped at the 40-second mark but Mines blocked a final takedown attempt and owned riding time for the decision.
A.J. Schopp continued his impressive winning with a fall at 2:29 over 15
th-ranked Nick Wilcox, who fell to 18-5. Schopp, ranked third at 133 lbs., won his eighth straight match, with six of those by falls. He is now 23-2 and has 14 falls. He was leading 7-0 thanks to a takedown and five near-fall points before winning by fall.
Mitchell Port (23-3), ranked fifth at 141 lbs., followed with an 11-4 decision over Matt Rappo (13-12). The sophomore actually fell behind early as Rappo recorded the first takedown a minute into the match. After an escape, he took a 3-2 lead with a takedown with six seconds left in the first period. A quick escape in the second gave him a 4-2 advantage, and he added his second takedown with 48 seconds left. Rappo would cut the margin to 6-3 with an escape in the third period, but Port would add two more takedowns along with riding time.
Dave Habat closed out Edinboro's run with a 4-0 decision over Josh Roosa (14-4) at 149 lbs., giving the Fighting Scots a 15-0 lead. Ranked 16
th, Habat boosted his record to 20-7 thanks to a second period escape, followed by the lone takedown of the match with ten seconds left in the period. Habat rode out Roosa in the third to gain riding time.
Frank Hickman got Bloomsburg on the board in a big way at 157 lbs. with a a 19-4 (7:000 technical fall over
Michael DePalma, who fell to 19-10. Hickman, who is now 19-3 and ranked 11
th, led just 2-0 after one period, but boosted that margin to 7-1 after two periods. He pulled away in the third period on the strength of four takedowns.
Johnny Greisheimer renewed his rivalry with 13
th-ranked Josh Veltre at 165 lbs., but he was unable to pull off the upset, losing a 5-2 decision. Following a scoreless first period, Greisheimer opened the second with an escape, and that was the way the second period ended. Veltre would knot it with an escape 16 seconds into the bout. Veltre survived a wild scramble to post the first takedown for a 3-1 lead. Greisheimer escaped, but Veltre added a late takedown for the final margin. Greisheimer falls to 14-9, while Veltre is 25-5.
Bloomsburg's Chris Smith (13-11) followed with a 6-2 decision over redshirt freshman
Patrick Jennings at 174 lbs., pulling the Huskies to within 15-11. Smith led 2-1 after one period, then added an escape for a 3-1 lead after two periods. Smith would gain riding time before Jennings could escape to make it 3-2. The Bloomsburg junior got a takedown at the buzzer for the final points plus riding time, dropping Jennings to 11-18.
Freshman Vince Pickett stopped the Bloomsburg run while giving Edinboro an 18-11 lead with a 3-2 decision over Andre Petroski (11-13) at 184 lbs. Petroski opened the scoring with a second period escape, but Pickett would do all of his scoring in the third period with a reversal just five seconds into the final period. Petroski would escape to tie at 2-2, but Pickett owned a 1:19 advantage in riding time for the winning point. He is now 18-11.
At 197 lbs., 19
th-ranked Richard Perry (23-3) dominated over
Warren Bosch (11-13) for a 23-9 major decision. He had a 6-2 lead after a period thanks to three takedowns, then three more takedowns and three near-fall points for a 15-4 lead after two. He added four more takedowns in the third period.
That left the match up to heavyweight, a position
Ernest James has been in on numerous occasions. This time the 20
th-ranked junior fell short as he dropped a 9-4 decision to 18
th-ranked Justin Grant. The first period was scoreless, but Grant gained a quick escape in the second, was awarded a point for stalling, and registered the first takedown of the match to go ahead 4-1 after two periods. A James' escape to start the third made it 4-2, but James was called for stalling again to give Grant another point and a 5-2 lead. Grant would add two takedowns in the final forty seconds as he improved to 18-3 while sending James to 18-8.
Edinboro doesn't have much time to dwell on the loss. The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday night, hosting Cleveland State in an 8 p.m. match at McComb Fieldhouse.
