EDINBORO
Head Coach: Scott Browning (Ohio State '81)
Record at Edinboro: 51-31, eighth year
Career Record: 51-31, eighth year
Scott Browning (Ohio State '81) took over as Edinboro's 13th head coach on January 5, 2006, and in his first six seasons he tied the record for most wins by a coach during that period. Browning is now in his eighth season with a 51-31 record. With the season-opening 35-34 win over Walsh, he became the third coach at Edinboro to reach 50 wins, joining Tom Hollman and Bill McDonald. Browning was certainly no stranger to Fighting Scot football when he was hired as head coach, serving as an assistant coach for the previous twenty years. While at Edinboro he has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator. Browning became the first head coach at Edinboro to debut with a win since McDonald in 1969 when the Fighting Scots opened the 2006 season with a 28-14 win at West Chester. He went on to lead Edinboro to a 6-5 finish, the most wins ever by a first-year coach. That was followed by a 7-4 finish in 2007. His next two Fighting Scot editions recorded a school-record tying nine wins. in 2008 Edinboro ended the year at 9-2 and was ranked 20th in the final AFCA?Top 25. The Fighting Scots had a 9-4 record in 2009, making the NCAA?playoffs for the first time in his tenure. Edinboro would end the year 24th in the AFCA?poll. The Boro posted back-to-back 7-4 finishes in 2010 and 2011. Last year's 4-6 finish represented Browning's first losing season as head coach.

THE GAME STORY
Edinboro snapped a two-game losing streak last Saturday in its first-ever meeting with Seton Hill, prevailing 43-7. The Fighting Scots turned in a balanced effort offensively with 191 yards passing and a season-high 176 yards rushing. After turning the ball over five times in each of the previous two games while suffering a 47-35 loss to 15th-ranked Bloomsburg and a 20-7 defeat at California(Pa.), the Scots committed just one turnover, though Seton Hill turned it into its lone touchdown. The defense turned in its second straight strong effort, limiting the Griffins to 116 total yards, forcing four turnovers, and recording five sacks.
It's Homecoming at Edinboro, and the Fighting Scots come in with a 2-2 overall record. In year's past, the Lock Haven game was a PSAC West contest, but the addition of Seton Hill this year pushed the Bald Eagles over to the Eastern Division.
Lock Haven enters the game with an identical 2-2 record, unfamiliar territory for a rebuilding squad. The Bald Eagles had not won two games in a season since 2006, and a three-win season would be the first since 2004. Lock Haven has wins over West Virginia State (31-13) and Cheyney (12-10). This past week Bloomsburg, now ranked 11th, defeated the Bald Eagles, 56-10.
Edinboro has won the last 12 meetings with Lock Haven, including a 35-19 decision last year at Hubert Jack Stadium. The last time the Bald Eagles prevailed was in 2000 by a 20-16 score. Edinboro has won the last 15 meetings at Sox Harrison Stadium, with Lock Haven's last win in 1981 (14-13).
Edinboro was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC?West in the coaches' preseason poll, while Lock Haven was voted sixth in the Eastern Division.
Edinboro head coach
Scott Browning became the third coach at Edinboro to reach 50 career wins with the Walsh victory. Now in his eighth season at the helm, the Fighting Scots are 51-31 under Browning. They are looking to rebound from a 4-6 record in 2012, the first losing season under Browning along with the first since 2002.
The Fighting Scots continue to battle a host of injuries. The offense has been missing four starters the last two weeks, while the defense was minus three who opened the year in the starting lineup. Most noteworthy is senior quarterback
Cody Harris, who had accounted for nine of Edinboro's ten touchdowns in the first two games. Harris is out indefinitely. Tailback
D'Andrea Vaughn, offensive guard
Kyle Lanich, and wide receiver
Darren Massey all missed the California(Pa.) game on offense, with the defense having to replace linebacker
Chris Mitchell and defensive end
Blaine Iskula. Against Seton Hill, Vaughn returned, but the wide receiver
Kevin Sonnie was out. The defense saw Iskula return, but the linebacking corps took another big hit with the loss of
Kyle Matula. Defensive end
Domenic Principale, who was playing inspired football as Iskula's replacement, was lost early in the Seton Hill contest and is questionable this week.
Three of Edinboro's six losses in 2012 came to nationally-ranked teams, and the Scots' first defeat in 2013 was also to a ranked outfit. Edinboro dropped a 47-35 decision to 15th-ranked Bloomsburg, and California(Pa.) was among others receiving votes. In 2012, the Scots lost to then-19th ranked Bloomsburg, 30-14, the opening week of the season, followed by a 24-14 loss to sixth-ranked California(Pa.) the following week. Later in the season 22nd-ranked IUP handed the Boro a 26-10 defeat. The combined record of the six teams Edinboro lost to was 52-18.
LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
Edinboro 43, Seton Hill 7
The defense pitched a shutout and the offense received a yeoman's relief effort from
Jon Girvin in the first-ever meeting with the Griffins. The lone points by Seton Hill came courtesy of a fumble return for a touchdown, but by that time Edinboro held a 36-0 lead. The defense limited Seton Hill to 116 total yards, forced four turnovers, recorded five sacks, and allowed just one third down conversion in 12 attempts. The offense, meanwhile, received a pick-me-up from Girvin, who entered on the third series, and featured a balanced effort. The redshirt freshman quarterback struggled in his first start a week earlier at California(Pa.), but he came off the bench to throw for two touchdowns and run for a pair of one-yard scores. His touchdown passes came on throws of seven yards to
Marcus Johnson and eight yards to
D'Andrea Vaughn. All told, he completed 18 of 28 passes for 150 yards and added 36 yards rushing. Johnson caught seven passes for 51 yards and had a 66-yard kickoff return.
Jeremy Donaldson added a 22-yard TD run and matched his career high with 89 yards rushing. Freshman placekicker
T.J. Hardy was perfect on three field goal attempts, two from 27 yards along with a 39-yarder.
Bloomsburg 56, Lock Haven 10
The Bald Eagles fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss to the 11th-ranked Huskies. Just as Edinboro found, it is near impossible to slow down the Bloomsburg ground game. Lock Haven held a short-lived 7-0 lead after Brandon Brader caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Mazzoni, but it was all Bloomsburg after that. the Huskies would score the next 28 points before Alex Boumerhi kicked a 43-yard field goal. Mazzoni would finish with a career-best 206 yards passing, completing 14 of 26 passes. Jesse Hoover was the main beneficiary, with five catches for 49 yards. Bloomsburg would finish with 409 yards rushing and 593 total yards. Lock Haven ended the afternoon with 59 and 315, respectively.
Browning Comments ... on the Fighting Scots
"I thought we played extremely well. Defensively we continue to get better. We played with discipline and we played hard. I was really proud of them. Offensively we got off to a slow start and left some points out there. I thought we got better in every area with the offense as the game went on. Special teams played well. That was an area we wanted to win, and I think we definitely won that phase. It was a good team victory for us. It was just what the doctor ordered."
Browning Comments ... on the Bald Eagles
"Lock Haven comes in with a 2-2 record. It's been a long time since they've had two wins. They're playing with a lot more confidence. The Bloomsburg score was lopsided, but the game wasn't really that lopsided. They're trying to make progress every week."
