INDIANA, PA – Edinboro fell just short of their bid to win their first men's tennis championship since 1978 on Sunday afternoon at IUP, losing to Kutztown 5-2. The match, scheduled to be completed yesterday, was pushed back one day due to inclement weather.
Rushi Amin and Varun Desai got Kutztown on the board early with an 8-0 doubles win over
Colin Bandell and
Brandon Romain.
Amir Talab and
Kody Duncan would answer back with a 9-8 (7-3) victory over Rich Lichtenwalner and Ben Nace to tie it at one. Matt Maguire and Ken Beebe gave Kutztown the 2-1 lead after doubles play with a 9-8 (7-3) win over
Kevin Caldwell and
James Cooper.
In singles play, Edinboro got their lone win from Bandell, who defeated Patricio Hernandez 6-1, 6-1. Kutztown put the championship away however, thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 Amin victory over Caldwell, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 Maguire win over Duncan, and a 7-5, 6-4 Nace victory over Cooper.
Second-place is the highest the Fighting Scots have finished since re-adding men's tennis in 2010-2011. Edinboro now plays the waiting game to see if they will be one of the seven at-large selections to participate in the Atlantic Regional.
