Edinboro Secures No. 2 Seed at PSAC Championships With 7-2 Win Over Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. (April 10, 2014) - The Edinboro men's tennis clinched the second seed at the upcoming PSAC Championships with a 7-2 triumph over local PSAC rival Mercyhurst on Thursday afternoon at Penn State-Behrend. The Fighting Scots improved to 4-1 in PSAC play and 13-8 overall with the win, while the Lakers fall to 3-2 in the conference and 6-8 on the season. Edinboro will square off with Mercyhurst in the first round of the PSAC Championship, as the Lakers locked the third seed in the postseason with the loss. Kutztown enters the PSAC Championship as the top seed, while host West Chester sits in the fourth and final spot.

The Fighting Scots swept doubles competition against the Lakers, as Bruno Borja and Brandon Romain picked up a tiebreaker victory over Robert Rizea and Daniel Gimenez by a score of 9-8 (7-1) at no. 2 doubles.

The duo of James Cooper and Thomas Pellegrino notched an 8-4 win at no. 3 singles, as well.

Matias Aignasse topped Travis Beck at no. 1 singles by scores of 7-5 and 6-0 in a matchup of regionally-ranked contenders. Aignasse came into the match ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Rankings, while Travis Beck sits at tenth in the rankings.

Juan Estepa and Amir Talab each collected three-set victories at no. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, wile Brandon Romain cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the no. 5 singles position.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Sunday, April 13 in their home finale against Davis & Elkins. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.

The PSAC Men's Tennis Team Championship takes place on April 17 and 18 in West Chester, PA.
