EDINBORO, Pa. (April 15, 2014) – The Edinboro men's tennis team rolls into the PSAC Championship this Thursday in West Chester, PA having won seven consecutive matches. The Fighting Scots, who earned the second seed for the conference championships, will take on local rival Mercyhurst on Thursday at 12 p.m. at West Chester University.
Edinboro recently defeated the Lakers 7-2 on April 10, securing the second seed for the championships. Head Coach
Lee Underwood and the Fighting Scots closed the regular season with a 4-1 record in PSAC play and a 15-8 overall mark. Mercyhurst capped the 2014 campaign with a 3-2 ledger in the conference and a 7-8 record on the season.
Edinboro is led by junior
Matias Aignasse, who has compiled a 17-3 record at no. 1 singles this spring. Aignasse, like the Fighting Scots, has won seven straight matches in singles play.
Newcomer
Juan Estepa has delivered a strong spring campaign, posting a 14-6 record in singles competition at both the no. 2 and 3 positions. Estepa was named the PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 6 after recording a 4-0 singles mark on the week.
Freshman
Bruno Borja (17-10) regularly competes at the no. 2 singles spot for Edinboro, including a 7-3 mark in his last 10 matches.
Amir Talab has earned a team-high 19 victories on the season in singles play. Talab has won four consecutive matches and nine of his last ten contests at the no. 4 and 5 singles position.
Brandon Romain (12-9) and
Raffaele Fusulan (8-5) round out singles competition for Edinboro, each posting 7-3 records in their last ten singles matches.
In doubles play, the duo of
James Cooper and
Thomas Pellegrino has been coming on strong as of late, winning six consecutive matches to boost their record to 13-8 in doubles competition.
Defending PSAC champion Kutztown earned the top seed for the tournament, finishing the season with a perfect 5-0 record in conference play and a 12-4 overall record. The Golden Bears topped the Fighting Scots by a score of 6-3 in the teams' only meeting on March 1. Edinboro is 12-4 since the loss to Kutztown.
The Golden Bears bested the Scots in the PSAC Finals a year ago by a score of 5-2, after Edinboro upset top-seeded West Chester in the semifinals to reach the championship.
The host Golden Rams round out the PSAC Championship field as the four seed. West Chester faces off with Kutztown at 12 p.m. on Thursday, as well.
The winners of the two matches will move on to the championship on Friday, April 18 at 9 a.m. in West Chester.
