Lee Underwood, the Edinboro men's tennis team will look to capture its second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship as it enters the four-team conference tournament as the top seed this weekend in Bloomsburg, Pa. The Fighting Scots own a 13-6 overall mark and finished the conference season with a perfect 5-0 ledger.
Bruno BorjaEdinboro will take on No. 4 West Chester at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 24 in a PSAC Semifinal match. Second-seeded Kutztown will face off with No. 3 Mercyhurst in the other semifinal at 3 p.m., as well. The winners of each contest will battle for the PSAC crown on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m., with a consolation match taking place at the same time.
The Fighting Scots have won five consecutive matches coming into the PSAC Tournament, after topping Bloomsburg and Kutztown this past weekend by a combined score of 15-3. Edinboro has won 12 matches in a row and 15 of its last 17 contests against PSAC opponents, with their last loss to a conference foe coming against Kutztown on March 1, 2014.
The Fighting Scots are seeking their fifth title in school history overall and can become the first team to win back-to-back PSAC crowns since Kutztown in 2010-11.
Edinboro is led by
Vitor Albanese, who has captured nine straight singles victories coming into the PSAC Tournament. The freshman shows a 14-2 record on the season and is 8-0 at the No. 1 singles slot.
He was named the PSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending April 19 after posting perfect 2-0 marks in singles play and in doubles competition with teammate
Brandon Romain. The duo is 10-6 on the year at the top doubles position and has won three straight matches. Romain owns a 6-4 mark in singles play, as well.
Matias Aignasse Bruno Borja, the reigning PSAC Freshman of the Year, is tied for the team lead in wins at 14-10 on the season. He has come on strong as of late, posting a 7-3 ledger in his last 10 singles matches. Borja also leads the team with 16 doubles win (16-7), as he and teammate
Matias Aignasse are 9-1 as a doubles tandem this season at the No. 2 spot. Aignasse is the defending PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Year and is 9-10 in singles play this season, but is also 7-3 in his last 10 matches. The redshirt sophomore has posted a 13-5 mark in doubles competition.
Daniel Fernandez has been competing at the No. 4 singles slot for the Fighting Scots and owns a 10-7 record in singles play. He and doubles partner
Juan Estepa are 7-1 on the year at the No. 3 doubles position, while Estepa is second on the team with 15 wins in doubles competition (15-8) to go along with an 11-11 ledger in singles play. In addition, freshman
Anmol Sandhu is 11-5 in singles competition on the season.
Last season, Edinboro captured its first PSAC Men's Tennis Championship since the 1978 campaign. The Fighting Scots, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, bested local rival Mercyhurst 5-1 in the semifinals before topping top-seeded Kutztown 5-3 in the finals. The Fighting Scots would go on to win their first NCAA Atlantic Regional title in school history.
Edinboro also won PSAC Championships in 1964 and 1974.
