Edinboro to Face Charleston (WV) in NCAA Atlantic Regional

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 28, 2015) – After capturing its second consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title on Saturday, the Edinboro men's tennis team punched its ticket to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional for the second straight season.

The Fighting Scots earned the No. 5 seed for the regional, the NCAA announced on Tuesday night. Edinboro will face fourth-seeded Charleston (W. Va.) in Bluefield, W. Va. on May 3 in a rematch of last season's NCAA first round matchup. The winner will take on host and top-seeded Bluefield State on May 4 in the Atlantic Regional #1 final, with the winner of that match advancing to the NCAA Division II Round of 16.

The NCAA Atlantic Regional 2 will be hosted by West Liberty. The No. 2 Hilltoppers will face No. 7 Shaw, who earned an automatic bid by winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. Third-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan is set to take on No. 6 Mercyhurst in the other first round matchup in West Liberty, W. Va.

The Fighting Scots own a 15-6 overall record this season and have won seven matches in a row coming into the Atlantic Regional.

Edinboro was edged by Charleston earlier this season by a score of 5-4 in Hilton Head Island, S.C. However, the Fighting Scots defeated the Golden Eagles last season in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional by an identical 5-4 score, giving Edinboro its first NCAA Tournament win in program history. Edinboro then topped Kutztown in the Atlantic Region 2 final to advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., where the Fighting Scots would fall to eventual national champion West Florida.

Edinboro freshman Vitor Albanese holds a 15-2 record on the season in singles play, good for the team lead in wins. Albanese has won 10 singles matches in a row and is second in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Singles Rankings.

Bruno Borja owns a 14-10 singles mark on the season, while Matias Aignasse is 11-10 in singles play. Borja is 15th in the ITA Atlantic Regional Singles Rankings. Aignasse sits 12th in the regional rankings and was recently named the PSAC Championship Most Valuable Player after clinching the conference title with a win at No. 2 singles for the Fighting Scots.

Edinboro's doubles teams are red-hot coming into the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The duo of Aignasse and Borja has won nine doubles matches in a row, the tandem of Albanese and teammate Brandon Romain has claimed five consecutive victories at the No. 1 singles spot, while Juan Estepa and Daniel Fernandez have captured five straight doubles triumphs.
