BLUEFIELD, W. Va. (May 3, 2015) – The Edinboro men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Charleston (W. Va.) on Sunday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament at the Bluefield City Tennis Courts in Bluefield, W. Va. With the win, the fifth-seeded Fighting Scots move on to face top-seeded Bluefield State on Monday in the Atlantic Region 1 Final.
Edinboro extends its winning streak to eight matches with Sunday's triumph, improving to 16-6 on the season, while the Golden Eagles close the season at 13-6. The Fighting Scots also avenged a 5-4 loss at the hands of Charleston earlier this season.
Edinboro won two of three doubles matches, as the duo of
Matias Aignasse and
Bruno Borja won its 10th consecutive match by a score of 8-6 at the No. 2 doubles slot, while the tandem of
Juan Estepa and
Daniel Fernandez captured its eighth straight victory with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play,
Vitor Albanese continued his winning ways with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the top singles position to earn his 11
th singles match in a row.
Borja collected a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles and Estepa earned his fifth straight win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 singles position.
Tomorrow's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region 1 Final is set to begin at 11 a.m. Monday against top-seeded Bluefield State. The Blues enter the contest with a 14-6 overall mark on the season. The winner of Monday's match will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz.
