Edinboro Game Notes

The Game Story
Edinboro wraps up the regular season in search of a record-tying ninth win. Nine times previously an Edinboro team won nine games, the last coming in 2009. What makes this year's 8-2 record even more remarkable is that the Fighting Scots were 0-11 a year ago and picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West this year. Edinboro will recognize 16 seniors prior to the game. The Fighting Scots enter the game ranked seventh in the latest Super Region One poll. Cheyney comes in with a 1-9 record, losing their last nine games after a 21-20 overtime win over Lincoln in the season opener.

The Justin Lustig Era wraps up year one with an incredible start. The Fighting Scots are 8-2, with both losses to nationally-ranked teams, after the 2015 squad went 0-11.  Edinboro opened the season with road wins at Saint Joseph's(In.) (31-30) and at Lock Haven (44-38), followed by a classic 54-51 double overtime win over West Chester in the home opener. The Fighting Scots opened PSAC West action with a 56-28 loss to then ninth-ranked Indiana(Pa.), but righted themselves nicely with an impressive 62-14 win at Clarion.  That was followed by back- to-back wins over local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst, a 41-17 Homecoming win over the Golden Knights, and a 45-16 win at Mercyhurst. Edinboro then won a 37-35 decision at Slippery Rock, snapping a six-game losing streak to The Rock. Two weeks ago, the Fighting Scots ran their winning streak to five straight with a come-from-behind 42-34 win over Seton Hill.  That streak ended last week, as sixth-ranked California(Pa.) handed Edinboro a 52-7 defeat.

} Edinboro debuted in the AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll last week in 24th place. The loss to California(Pa.) dropped the Fighting Scots out of the poll, but they are still among "Others Receiving Votes" this week.  The ranking was the first for Edinboro since October 3, 2011.

} A total of 16 seniors will be recognized on Senior Day in pre-game ceremonies -- 14 players and two managers. The players include:  OG Tavious Bridges, C Zack Hartin, TE Nick Helmick, WR Connor Hollenbeck, DE?Victor Hudson, NG Josh Kibbie, DB?Jake Leber, LB Austin Mietz, DB?Rontrell Peyton, PK/P Austin Reese, WR Sean Rolick, LB Mike Shansky, LB?Gabe Tillman, WR?Jordan Williams
} In addition to Senior Day, Edinboro is holding Military Appreciation Day on Saturday. All members of the military and veterans will receive free admission to the Edinboro-Cheyney game. The offer also holds for Edinboro's volleyball match with Gannon and the men's basketball game with Thiel on Saturday.

} Edinboro saw its five-game road winning streak come to an end at Cal.  The streak marked the longest since the 2003 season.  They began the year losers of eight straight road games dating back to October 2014. The Fighting Scots' win at Saint Joseph's in the season opener snapped an 11-game losing streak after Edinboro had suffered its first winless season since 1951 and the seventh in school history.
} The Fighting Scots are ranked seventh in the NCAA's Super Region One poll for the third straight week. California(Pa.) is first and Shepherd second. The top seven teams receive NCAA playoff bids, but Edinboro could be bumped by the NCCA's "earned access" policy.

} This is a battle of the two teams picked to finish last at the beginning of the year in the PSAC?Coaches' Preseason Poll. Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West, while Cheyney was picked to finish eighth in the Eastern Division.

} Cheyney opened the year with a 21-20 overtime victory over Lincoln, snapping a 43-game losing streak. The Wolves have since gone on to lose their last nine games. They have not scored more than two touchdowns in any of those games.

} Jake Sisson continues to rank among the NCAA leaders in passing and total offense.  The junior quarterback has been named the PSAC?West Offensive Player of the Week three times, and has been named the D2Football.com Offensive Player of the Week twice. He was responsible for a school-record seven touchdowns at Clarion. Sisson currently ranks second in NCAA Division II in passing touchdowns (37) and third in points responsible for (252). He ranks first in the PSAC and second nationally in yards passing (3,338) and passing yards per game (333.8), while ranking first and fourth, respectively, in total offense (345.4 ypg.).

The Last Meeting
} Edinboro 41, Cheyney 13
Brian Davis came off the bench to score on three short touchdown runs (1, 2 and 4 yards) and rush for a career-high 101 yards.  Alex Romanias remained perfect on the season as he converted all five extra point attempts and made field goals of 35 and 37 yards.  Edinboro featured a very balanced attack as the Fighting Scots passed for 175 yards and rushed for 174. Cody Harris completed 21 of 26 passes for 163 yards with a TD and an INT, with Nick Marino catching 8 passes for 62 yards. The defense limited Cheyney to just 116 total yards.

Last Week
} California(Pa.) 52, Edinboro 7
Penalties and a turnovers proved too much to overcome against a Califiornia(Pa.) team which came in ranked sixth in Division II. Edinboro debuted in the AFCA rankings in 24th place, and for nearly a half the Scots battled the Vulcans with a potential spot in the PSAC Championship game on the line. Cal took a quick 7-0 lead, but Edinboro answered with a four-play, 44-yard drive following Aaron Rodgers' interception. Jake Sisson's four-yard TD run tied the score at 7-7 with 11:59 left in the second quarter. A Cal interception on a tipped ball was returned to the Boro 2, and with just over nine minutes in the half, the Vulcans took a 14-7 lead. That would begin a stretch of 45 straight points for Cal. The Vulcans would take a 21-7 lead with 17 seconds left in the half to cap a 63-yard drive that was aided by two Edinboro penalties that resulted in first downs. Cal would score two more touchdowns in the third quarter, and add 17 fourth-quarter points. Edinboro was limited to a season-low 231 yards, while the Vulcans finished with 415 yards. Edinboro entered as one of the least-penalized teams in the PSAC, but the Scots were guilty of 10 penalties for 90 yards.Cal picked up six first downs due to penalties. Sisson was held without a touchdown passing for the first time this season. The junior completed 18 of 46 passes for 145 yards with 2 INTs.
} Kutztown 32, Cheyney 6
The Wolves held PSAC?East champion Kutztown to 335 yards, but they managed just one touchdown and 280 yards themselves. Cheyney was guilty of three turnovers and allowed seven sacks. Kutztown jumped out to a 19-0 halftime lead, but Cheyney cut the deficit to 19-6 on Brandon French's three-yard TD run midway through the third quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 28-yard interception return by Quindon Stinson.  Devin Miller ran for 64 yards on 13 carries, with French adding 47 yards in 13 rushes. Dominick Trautz completed 14 of 31 passes for 136 yards with 2 INTs.

Lustig Comments ... on the Fighting Scots
"There were three or four significant plays late in the first quarter and early in second quarter that didn't go our way that totally changed the complexion of the game against Cal. Unfortunately, we did not play our best game. When you are playing a team as good as they are you must be firing on all cylinders, and I don't think we put our best effort on the field on Saturday. "

Lustig Comments ... on the Wolves
"Cheyney has several explosive athletes that can make a difference in a football game. We must control their best players by executing our schemes in all three phases. There is still a lot to play for, so there is no doubt that our team will be motivated."
