ERIE, Pa. (February 20, 2016) - The Edinboro University men's tennis team continued their undefeated season on Saturday, defeating Walsh, 7-2, at the Westwood Racquet Club. The win marked Edinboro's first win over Walsh since the program's resurrection in 2010. The Fighting Scots avenged a 7-2 defeat to the Cavaliers when the two teams met last year.
"Two big wins for us as this is the first time since I've been here we have won," said head coach
Lee Underwood, referencing both the men's and women's teams defeating Walsh Saturday. Last year women lost, 9-0, I believe and men lost, 7-2, last year."
Five of Edinboro's victories came in the singles matches. Sophomore
Vitor Albanese defeated Vasily Vidmanov with matching 6-4 scores. After losing his first set, 6-3,
Mateus Santos came back to defeat Ross Whitaker, winning the second set, 6-3, and the third set, 7-6.
Camilo Moncayo, a newcomer to the Fighting Scots this spring, won his match against Carlos Jaque in three sets, winning the first, 7-6, and the third, 6-2.
Daniel Fernandez defeated Heitor Adegas, 6-1 and 7-5, while
Thomas McCoy beat Jose Fernandez, 6-2 and 6-4.
The Fighting Scots won two doubles matches. Albanese and Moncayo teamed up to beat Vidmanov and Whittaker, 8-2, while the tandem of
Mauricio Santos and
Kevin Mboko defeated Jonah Carter and Tim Bruin by an 8-5 showing.
Edinboro men's tennis continues its season on Sunday when they host LeMoyne at 4:00 p.m. at West Racquet Club.
