Men’s Tennis Earns Second Straight PSAC Regular Season Championship, Beats Mercyhurst 6-3

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 13, 2016) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team captured its second straight PSAC regular season championship with a 6-3 home victory over Mercyhurst Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots, who were ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA, completed a perfect 5-0 PSAC mark for the second consecutive year and improved to 19-2, tying the school season record for wins. They also extended their winning streak to nine matches. The Lakers, who were ranked sixth in the region, dropped to 9-5 overall with a 4-1 PSAC record.

The Fighting Scots began the contest by posting two doubles victories. The duo of Vitor Albanese and Camilo Moncayo, who are ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region in the latest Oracle/ITA poll, improved to 16-2 after defeating Travis Beck and Nenad Terzic, the region's sixth-ranked tandem, by a 9-7 score. Kevin Mboko and Mauricio Santos defeated Joaquin Aguilera and Dusan Cerny, 8-6.

Edinboro took four out of six singles matches to clinch the victory. Mauricio Santos (19-8) and Daniel Fernandez (19-4) each picked up their 19th singles win, which is tied for second-best on the team, with wins over Conor McCooey and Andoni Marquez, respectively. After a 6-4 defeat in the first set, Moncayo downed Aguilera, who is ranked tenth in the region in singles, in the final two sets by 6-2 and 4-1 respective decisions. Mateus Santos beat Beck, who is ranked 16th in the region, in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.

Head coach Lee Underwood's team is now one win away from breaking the all-time season wins record, which was set in 2013-14. They look to break the record in their next contest, a home match against New York Institute of Technology, on Sunday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m.
