EDINBORO, Pa. (April 20, 2016) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team celebrated history in their regular season finale on Wednesday, as they captured the program's first ever 20-win season with an 8-1 victory over Allegheny. The Fighting Scots, who are ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA, concluded the regular season at 20-3. The Gators dropped to 7-11.
The victory also broke the all-time school season record of 19 wins, which was set during the 2013-14 season.
Edinboro took two out of three doubles matches and swept Allegheny in the singles competition on their way to the victory. Five of Edinboro's singles matches were won in straight sets, including
Vitor Albanese;s 6-4 and 6-2 win over Thomas Manning to improve to a team-best 28-3 singles mark. Albanese is ranked third in singles in the Atlantic Region in the latest poll by Oracle/ITA.
Camilo Moncayo trailed Jai Redkar after the first set, but rallied to take a 7-5 win in the second set and a 10-5 victory in the third set.
Mateus Santos beat Andreas Landgrebe, 6-4 and 6-3, to improve to 21-5, which is second on the team.
Daniel Fernandez and
Mateus Santos, who are ranked tenth in the region in doubles climbed to a team-best 19-8 mark with an 8-4 win over Tyler Triolo and Zach Anderson.
Kevin Mboko and
Mauricio Santos supplied Edinboro's second doubles win with an 8-5 decision over Samarth Gopal and Colton Johnson Taylor. Albanese and Mocayo played a close contest versus Manning and Redkar, but fell, 9-8 (2).
The Fighting Scots now turn their attention to the PSAC tournament, which begins Friday, April 29. Edinboro looks for its third straight conference title after finishing first in the conference with a 5-0 PSAC record.
