EDINBORO, Pa. (April 27, 2016) – A young Edinboro men's tennis team featuring a roster entirely made up of freshmen and sophomores enters this weekend's 2016 PSAC Tennis Championships as the favorite after winning all five of their PSAC matches. The Fighting Scots seek their third straight PSAC men's title. They will open defense of their crown on Friday, April 29 at 12 noon against West Chester, the number four seed, in one of two semifinal matches at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
Mercyhurst, the number two seed, will meet host Bloomsburg, the third seed, in the other semifinal. That contest will also be played at 12 noon. The winners of the two semifinal matches will meet in the PSAC championship match on Saturday, April 30, tentatively at 11 a.m.
A year ago, head coach
Lee Underwood's Fighting Scots also met West Chester in the semifinals, prevailing 5-0 over the Golden Rams, before defeating Mercyhurst, 5-1, in the finals to win their second straight conference championship.
Edinboro defeated West Chester, 9-0, earlier this month. The Fighting Scots were a 7-2 winner over Bloomsburg, and two weeks ago handed local rival Mercyhurst a 6-3 defeat. Edinboro comes in with a 20-3 overall record, breaking the previous record for wins in a season set when the 2013-14 team finished at 19-9. West Chester has a 5-14 overall record and was 2-3 in the PSAC. Mercyhurst has a 9-7 record and was 4-1 in league action, while Bloomsburg is 6-7 and 3-2, respectively.
Underwood will once again call on his young lineup, showcased by sophomore
Vitor Albanese. Thee 2015 PSAC Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year, the sophomore comes in with a 28-3 record while playing at number one singles, and is expected to team with freshman
Camilo Moncayo at number one doubles. The duo has combined for a 16-4 record. Moncayo has taken over at number two singles, as well, showing an 11-8 ledger.
Freshmen Maurico Santos (20-9) and
Mateus Santos (22-5) (no relation) line up at three and four singles.
Daniel Fernandez, the only other sophomore in the lineup, has a 20-5 record at number five singles, while freshman
Thomas McCoy is 13-6 at number six singles. Fernandez and
Mateus Santos combine for a 19-8 record at number two doubles, and the all-freshmen tandem of
Kevin Mboko and Maricio Santos are 17-3 at number three doubles.
Edinboro must wait until Tuesday, May 3 to learn their fate for the NCAA Division Tournament. The Fighting Scots seek a third straight NCAA playoff appearance. They were ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II rankings.
