BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (April 30, 2016) – Heading into Saturday, the two-time defending PSAC champion Edinboro men's tennis team kept the script unchanged by playing in their fourth straight PSAC finals match, taking on Mercyhurst for the second straight year. At day's end at Bloomsburg University, they finalized their script with the same conclusion: a conference title. The Fighting Scots earned a pair of doubles victories and three singles wins for a 5-1 triumph over the Lakers to cement their third straight and sixth overall PSAC championship.
Sophomore
Daniel Fernandez was named the PSAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting a 2-0 doubles mark and 1-0 singles record during the two-day competition. Fernandez is 21-5 on the year in singles matches and a team-best 21-8 in doubles with partner
Mateus Santos.

"The most satisfying of all my championship teams," related head coach
Lee Underwood. "They bought into hard work and intensity and it showed through a course of 25 matches thus far. With losing six players from last year's championship squad and only two starters back, I first thought it was a rebuilding year, but quickly found out that with seven freshmen and two sophomores that we had the ingredients needed for this."
Edinboro also notched their sixth straight defeat of Mercyhurst, extending their winningest season in school history to a 22-3 record. The Lakers dropped to 10-8 and held a 4-1 PSAC mark. The Boro defeated Mercyhurst in their PSAC regular season finale, 6-3, on April 13 to finish 5-0 in the conference. The Fighting Scots and Lakers were the PSAC's lone mentions in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region poll, ranking second and sixth, respectively.
The tandem of Fernandez and
Mateus Santos claimed victory with an 8-3 showing against Conor McCooey and Andoni Marquez in the number-two spot. The number-three team of
Mauricio Santos and
Kevin Mboko grabbed the Boro's second doubles victory with an 8-3 win over Joaquin Aguilera and Dusan Cerny.
Vitor Albanese and
Camilo Moncayo were edged, 8-6, by Travis Beck and Nenad Terzic in the number-one column.
Albanese (30-3), the reigning PSAC singles champion, achieved his 30
th singles win, beating Nenad Terzic in the top position in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3. Moncayo earned Edinboro a victory, taking down Joaquin Aguilera, 7-5 and 6-4, in the number-two hole. Fernandez accounted for the Boro's deciding victory in the fifth spot, defeating Andoni Marquez, 6-0 and 6-1.
