The Game Story
  • Edinboro (4-11, 2-9 PSAC West) plays the second of its three-game road trip on Wednesday with a PSAC West contest at Clarion (5-11, 3-8 PSAC West). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tippin Gymnasium.
  • This will be the first meeting between Edinboro and Clarion since last season's PSAC Quarterfinals, where the sixth-seeded Golden Eagles defeated the third-seeded Fighting Scots, 83-69, at McComb Fieldhouse. They split the regular season series.
  • Edinboro, who was picked fifth in the PSAC West preseason poll, looks to end a five-game losing streak, while Clarion, who was picked eighth, seeks to end a seven-game losing streak.
  • Edinboro nearly upset 12th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, with a game-winning 3-pointer providing the difference in the 80-77 road defeat. Clarion, meanwhile, suffered a 110-104 double-overtime loss at Gannon on Saturday, marking their second overtime defeat in their last three contests.
  • Senior guard/forward Mikael Anderson scored a career-high 29 points against the Crimson Hawks for his fourth 20-point game of the season. He is the team's leading rebounder (5.9 rpg.) and ranks second on the team in scoring (14.0 ppg.) in his first year as a starter.
  • Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason has moved up to 15th place on the all-time career scoring list at Edinboro with 1,264 points. He is 16 points from passing Fred Riley for 14th all-time.
  • Edinboro concludes its road trip with a contest at Slippery Rock on Saturday, January 21 at 3:00 p.m.

  • Edinboro held a 40-32 halftime lead, but Clarion outscored the Fighting Scots in the second half, 51-29, shooting 62.5 percent from the field (15-for-24) and making 6-of-9 3-pointers. Edinboro shot 28.1 percent in the closing session (9-for-32).
  • Henri Wade-Chatman led Edinboro with 24 points. Tommy Scales had ten points with eight rebounds, while Quinn Lee Yaw had six points with ten boards. Mason tallied seven points with six assists, while Mike Beck had six points before fouling out in the second half.
  • Andre Anthony registered 24 points for the Golden Eagles, making 7-of-13 shots from the floor and 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Rob Agurs had 23 points with 11 rebounds, shooting 9-for-13 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc.

1/14/17 – No. 12 Indiana (Pa.) 80, Edinboro 77 at IUP BOX | RECAP
  • Edinboro led at the half, 41-32, and held as much as a 13-point lead on Indiana (Pa.) at 64-51 with 10:07 to play. IUP rallied and both sides found themselves tied at 77-77 with 50 seconds to go.
  • IUP's Anthony Glover drilled what would be the game-winning three with seven seconds remaining. A 3-point attempt by Mikael Anderson with a second to play fell short of the mark.
  • Anderson turned in a career-best 29 points, making 11-of-18 shots from the floor and 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Sheldon Brogdon made 3-of-5 3-pointers as he finished with 19 points, while Andre Frederick shot 6-of-8 from the floor for 12 markers. Mike Beck and Jon Girvin each grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
  • The Fighting Scots shot 50.8 percent from the field (31-for-61), marking their highest field-goal percentage since playing Lake Erie on November 16. Edinboro also held a 38-22 lead in points in the paint.
 
1/14/17 – Gannon 110, Clarion 104 (2OT) at Gannon University BOX | RECAP
  • Clarion led, 78-76, with two seconds to go in regulation before Gannon's Zay Jackson sank a pair of free throws to send the game to overtime.
  • Clarion's Kwame Morton Jr. sent the game into a second overtime at 92 after drilling a 3-pointer with two ticks left in the first overtime.
  • Cameron Grumley put Clarion ahead with a three at 95-94 with 4:24 to play. Gannon responded by scoring the next seven points, with the Golden Eagles getting no closer than four points the rest of the way.
  • The Golden Knights outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 42-28, and outscored them in the paint, 54-26. Gannon also held a 21-12 lead in second-chance points.
  • Six Golden Eagles finished in double digits, with Jamani Pierce and Grumley leading the way with 24 points and 22 points, respectively.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (43-51, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Clarion: Marcess Williams (29-43, 3rd year; Career: 187-42, 12th year)
  • Marcess Williams, in his second season in 2015-16, led Clarion to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2009-10 and posted a PSAC Quarterfinals win over Edinboro.
  • Williams inherited a Golden Eagles team that won just 11 games in the two years prior to his arrival. His first-year squad finished 10-16, a five-game improvement over the previous year, and further improved to 14-16 in 2015-16.
  • Williams previously served nine years as the head coach at Penn State-Beaver. The Lions won three straight PSUAC Championships (2009-11) and six straight PSAC West titles (2009-14) under Williams. They finished as USCAA Division 2 National runners-up in 2009.

  • Has moved into 15th place all-time on the all-time career scoring list at Edinboro with 1,264 points. He is 16 points from passing Fred Riley for 14th place.
  • Has tallied five 30-point games and eight 20-point games this season.
  • Third in the PSAC in scoring at 22.0 ppg. Sixth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.0 percent (43-for-105).
  • Posted his first career back-to-back 30-point performances with 30 points against West Chester on December 4 and 37 markers against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7.
  • Became the 28th Fighting Scot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone at Millersville on November 19.
  • Was the fourth-fastest to reach the 1,000-point mark, doing so in 55 games. Only Adam Cheek (49 games) Tyrone Mason (51 games), Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate (51 games) have reached the mark faster.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.

  • Redshirt junior forward Jon Girvin, who joined the team in early December, has started the last four games while filling in for an injured Jack Frank. Girvin, who played all 11 games at defensive end for the football team, posted nine rebounds at Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday. He had a career-high 11 boards off the bench in his second career game against Cheyney on December 10.
  • Junior guard/forward Mike Beck had a season-high nine rebounds on Saturday, while finishing with six points after making 2-of-4 3-pointers. He is averaging 12.0 ppg. and 5.3 rpg. over the last four contests.
  • Junior center Andre Frederick tied his career high with 12 points against the Crimson Hawks, making 6-of-8 shots from the floor in 21 minutes of action. He has netted 12 points on two other occasions this year, including a double-double performance at Shippensburg on November 20, where he grabbed ten boards. The transfer from Robert Morris has tallied 13 blocks over the last three games, including back-to-back six-block performances against Bloomsburg and Gannon.
Scouting Clarion
  • Clarion, after starting the year at 5-4, has lost its last seven games, most recently suffering a 110-104 double-overtime defeat at Gannon on Saturday. It marked the Golden Eagles' second overtime loss in their last three contests. They fell to Seton Hill in overtime, 81-77, on January 9.
  • The Golden Eagles were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. 
  • Clarion made the PSAC Tournament last season for the first time since 2009-10 and, as the sixth seed, defeated third-seeded Edinboro, 83-69, in the quarterfinals.
  • Senior guard BJ Andrews was an All-PSAC West preseason selection after being named to the All-PSAC West first team last year. He leads the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg. Andrews sat out Saturday's contest at Gannon.
  • Junior forward Jamani Pierce is second on the team averaging 12.9 ppg. The transfer from Illinois Central had a season-high 24 points at Gannon, and is averaging 14.6 over his last seven contests.
