The Game Story
  • Edinboro (6-12, 4-10 PSAC West) heads back out on the road on Saturday for a PSAC West contest at California (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots look to complete their second straight season sweep of the Vulcans.
  • Saturday's contest marks the beginning of the second half of the PSAC West season.
  • The Fighting Scots and Vulcans were ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the PSAC West preseason poll.
  • After a three-game road trip, which included victories over Clarion and Slippery Rock, Edinboro returned home on Wednesday to play Mercyhurst. The depleted Fighting Scots fell to the Lakers by a 79-59 score.
  • A series of injuries caused head coach Pat Cleary to play with just seven players on Wednesday. Senior starting forward Mikael Anderson missed the Mercyhurst game after suffering an injury against Slippery Rock last Saturday. He is listed as day-to-day. Anderson leads the team in rebounding at 6.0 rpg. and is second on the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg. The Fighting Scots have also been without starting center Jack Frank and guards Malachy Onwudiegwu and Michael Sims for an extended period.
  • Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason tallied his third straight 30-point game with 32 points against the Lakers. It is the first time in his career the 6'3" guard recorded three straight 30-point games. He now has eight 30-point games this year and 12 for his career. He needs five more to break the school season record.
  • Mason, who leads the PSAC and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II at 23.8 ppg., moved into a tie for 11th place all-time in Edinboro career scoring with 1,362 points. He needs 16 points to pass Darren Tielsch for 10th all-time.
  • After a 3-11 start, California (Pa.) has won its last two games and four of its last six. After beating Mercyhurst last Saturday, the Vulcans defeated Clarion by an 84-78 score on Wednesday.
  • New head coach Kent McBride leads the Vulcans this year after a successful five-year run as head coach at Concord. He led the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference championship in 2016.

  • Jaymon Mason (33 pts., 5 reb., 5 ast.), Mikael Anderson (20 pts., 7 reb.) and Sheldon Brogdon (18 pts.) combined for 71 of Edinboro's 76 points.
  • The Fighting Scots connected on 8-of-20 3-pointers, with Mason and Brogdon combining for seven of Edinboro's eight 3-pointers.
  • Edinboro led by double digits for most of the game until Cal used a 15-2 second-half run to tie the game at 69 with 1:29 remaining. Mason responded with a go-ahead 3-pointer to put the Fighting Scots ahead for good.

  • Jaymon Mason tallied 32 points for his third straight 30-point game. Maceo Baston, in his first career start at Edinboro, had 13 points, while Jon Girvin registered nine points with eight rebounds.
  • Edinboro trailed Mercyhurst at the half by just four points at 34-30. But the Lakers used a 60.7 field goal percentage (17-for-28) to pull away in the second half. After a Jaymon Mason three cut Mercyhurst's lead to 54-45 with 10:46 left, the Lakers responded with a 14-2 run for their largest lead of the game at 68-47 with 5:37 remaining.
  • Edinboro dressed just seven players, with four players out due to injuries, including two starters.
  • The Fighting Scots were forced into 16 turnovers, which led to 16 Mercyhurst points off turnovers. The Lakers held a 37-28 lead in rebounds and a 24-3 lead in bench points.
 
1/25/17 – California (Pa.) 84, Clarion 78 at Cal (Pa.) BOX | RECAP
  • California (Pa.) opened the game with a 17-2 lead before Clarion rallied to lead, 32-31, at halftime. The Vulcans started the second half on a 14-1 run to go back out in front, 45-33, with 14:27 to play. The Golden Eagles got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
  • Cal shot 60.0 percent (15-for-25) in the second half to overcome a 32.1 first-half shooting percentage (9-for-28). They finished at 45.3 percent (24-for-53), while Clarion shot 35.4 percent (23-for-65).
  • Daniel Sapp had a career-high 23 points, while Tony Richardson had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Luka Andjusic had 19 points off the bench with seven rebounds and six assists. Cordell Smith finished with 14 points in a reserve role.

Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (45-52, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
California (Pa.): Kent McBride, Concord '06 (7-13, 1st Year; Career: 90-76, 6th year)
  • Kent McBride is in his first year as California (Pa.)'s head coach following a five-year head coaching stint at Concord, where he compiled an 83-63 record.
  • McBride led the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference championship and their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. It was Concord's first league title since 1997.
  • The former Concord point guard served as an assistant coach for West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State before returning to the Mountain Lions.

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Scored 32 points against Mercyhurst Wednesday for his third straight 30-point game. He now has eight 30-point games this season and 12 for his career.
  • Is five away from breaking the school season record for 30-point games, set by his father, Tyrone Mason, with 12 in 1994-95.
  • Tallied 36 points at Clarion last Wednesday and 30 points with nine rebounds at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
  • Moved into a tie for 11th place all-time in career scoring with 1,362 points. He needs 16 points to pass Darren Tielsch for 10th place.
  • Has played all 40 minutes in the last seven games and has registered at least 38 minutes in 11 of the last 12 contests.
  • Leads the PSAC and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II in scoring at 23.9 ppg. Fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 42.3 percent (52-for-123).

  • Edinboro has had to overcome numerous injuries that left coach Pat Cleary's team suiting up just seven players against Mercyhurst on Wednesday. Mikael Anderson missed Wednesday's contest due to an injury he suffered at Slippery Rock last Saturday. Jack Frank started the first 11 games at center, but has missed the last seven games with an injury. Malachy Onwudiegwu has not played since early December due to an injury, missing the last 11 games. Finally, after working his way into guard rotation recently, Mike Sims went down with an injury in the second half of the Gannon game and has missed the last four contests.
  • Junior guard/forward Maceo Baston made his first career start for Edinboro on Wednesday. He tallied a season-high 13 points with four rebounds against the Lakers, making 6-of-12 shots from the floor.
  • Junior guard/forward Mike Beck has averaged 8.9 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. over the last seven games after scoring in double digits once in the first 11 games. He had a season-high 17 points against Gannon on January 11, matching his career high with five 3-pointers. He also had a season-high nine rebounds at Indiana (Pa.) on January 14.
Scouting California (Pa.)
  • After a 3-11 start, California (Pa.) has won its last two games and four of its last six. The Vulcans posted victories over Mercyhurst last Saturday, 69-52, and Clarion, 84-78, on Wednesday. This stretch also includes wins over Slippery Rock and Seton Hill.
  • The Vulcans, picked to finish ninth in the PSAC West preseason poll, endured a stretch earlier in the year where they lost 10 of 11 games, which included eight PSAC defeats.
  • The Vulcans look to end a four-game losing streak to the Fighting Scots. Their last win over Edinboro was a 69-63 win at McComb Fieldhouse on November 22, 2014.
  • First-year head coach Kent McBride, who came to California (Pa.) after a successful five-year stint leading Concord, looks to turnaround a program that went 7-21 and 4-18 in league play in 2015-16. He led the Mountain Lions to a MEC Championship in 2016.
