Tenth-Ranked Lehigh Defeats No. 24 Fighting Scots, 27-14

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team, ranked 24th in the latest USA Today/NWCA Division I Top 25, tasted defeat for the first time this season, suffering a 27-14 loss at tenth-ranked Lehigh. The Fighting Scots are now 2-1, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 2-0.

Neither team was at full strength, with the Fighting Scots missing starters Ty Schoffstall at 174 lbs. and Billy Miller at heavyweight. Miller's absence was evident immediately, as the match got underway at heavyweight. What would have been a matchup between ninth-ranked Miller and 13th-ranked Jordan Wood ended up being Wood vs. freshman Jon Spaulding. Wood would prevail by a 9-0 major decision.

The 125 lb. was schedule to feature a battle between All-Americans, with eighth-ranked Sean Russell facing fourth-ranked Darian Cruz, the defending national champion. Cruz did not take the mat, however, and Russell improved to 5-1 with a 19-4 technical fall at 5:09 over Aaron Burkett.

Lehigh would win the next two matches to take a 13-5 lead in the team score. Third-ranked Scott Parker improved to 5-0 with a fall at 5:33 over 11th-ranked Korbin Myers, who is now 4-2, at 133 lbs. Luke Karem followed with a 6-1 decision over Nate Hagan (2-5) at 141 lbs.

The Fighting Scots climbed back into the match with decisions at 149 and 157 lbs., making it 13-11. Freshman Peter Pappas boosted his record to 6-1 with an 11-10 triumph over Jonathan Mele at 149 lbs. Andrew Shomers picked up the biggest win of the night for Edinboro when he upset Ian Brown, 5-3. Brown came in unranked by InterMat, but was ranked 19th by FloWrestling. Shomers is now 7-1.

Lehigh would run off bonus point wins in the next two matches. Austin Matthews made his return to the lineup at 165 lbs., and came in ranked ninth, but he lost by major decision to Gordon Wolf, 16-8. Ninth-ranked Jordan Kutler followed with a 14-5 major decision over Fritz Hoehn (6-2), who moved up a weight class to fill in for Schoffstall at 174 lbs.

Dylan Reynolds improved to 4-2 with a 5-2 decision over Andrew Price at 184 lbs. The night endedwith Lehigh's Jake Jakobsen winning by fall at 0:52 over Aaron Paddock (1-5).

Edinboro returns to action on December 1-2, competing in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
