No. 47 Men’s Tennis Falls at Fairmont State, 6-3, in Spring Season Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 10, 2017) – The 47th-ranked Edinboro University men's tennis team opened the spring leg of their season Friday afternoon at Fairmont State. Despite Edinboro taking two out of three in the doubles competition, the Fighting Falcons used five singles victories to hand the Fighting Scots their first defeat of the season by a 6-3 score. Edinboro dropped to 3-1, while Fairmont State improved to 4-1.

Head coach Lee Underwood's team, ranked 47th in Division II by the ITA, met Fairmont State back in the fall at Allegheny's Gator Invitational, in which they handed the Fighting Falcons a 7-2 defeat to capture the tournament crown.

Things looked to be going a similar way for Edinboro early, with the tandems of Daniel Fernandez/Kevin Mboko and Mateus Santos/Mauricio Santos (no relation) each picking up 8-6 wins in the second and third doubles spots, respectively. However, the Boro's top doubles team of Vitor Albanese and Kolja Hein, who are ranked fifth in the ITA Atlantic Region doubles poll, fell to Guilherme Pachane and Tom Liddy, 8-4, for their first defeat of the year as a team, dropping to 7-1.

Daniel Fernandez accounted for the Fighting Scots' lone win in singles at the number-four spot, beating Matias Higueras, 6-4 and 7-5. Mauricio Santos battled Micah Hornak to three sets in the second singles spot, but ultimately fell, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2. Mateus Santos also went to three sets against Guilherme Pachane at number three singles, but came up just short, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4. Albanese, ranked number one in the region in singles, fell to Joao Lucas Alves in two close sets in the first spot, 7-5 and 6-4. Mboko met a similar fate against Tom Liddy in the fifth slot, while Thomas McCoy fell to Dillon Early, 6-0 and 6-2, at number six.
