Men's Tennis Begins Spring Season Friday at Fairmont State

EDINBORO, Pa. (February 8, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team opens up the spring leg of their season on Friday, February 10 at Fairmont State, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots, who are ranked second in the Atlantic Region and 47th in the ITA Division II National Rankings, look to build off their successful fall season, where they finished with a 3-0 record.

Head coach Lee Underwood's team posted victories over Grove City, Fairmont State and Walsh to begin the year. Junior Vitor Albanese, who is ranked first regionally and eighth nationally by the ITA, posted a 15-2 record in the fall as Edinboro's top singles player. The Brazil native won both the PSAC and ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championships and qualified for the ITA Oracle Cup in Surprise, Arizona, where he finished sixth.

Albanese and junior Daniel Fernandez went 4-2 in doubles in the fall and reached the final round of the PSAC Doubles Championship. The tandem lost a hard-fought match to Mercyhurst's Joaquin Aguilera and Nenad Terzic by a 9-7 score. Albanese has split time between Fernandez and freshman Kolja Hein as Edinboro's top doubles team, with Albanese and Hein ranking fifth in the region with a 7-0 record.

Sophomore Mauricio Santos is ranked 13th in the Atlantic Region with an 11-2 record as the Boro's number-three singles player. Fellow sophomore Mateus Santos (no relation) ranks 16th regionally, holding a 5-4 mark at the second singles spot.
