Edinboro Edged in Tight Battle with Division I George Mason

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (March 13, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team challenged Division I George Mason to a close contest to begin their five-match spring break trip. Despite taking two of the three doubles matches and singles wins from Vitor Albanese and Mateus Santos, the Patriots strung together four singles wins to edge the Fighting Scots by a 4-3 score. Edinboro dropped to 7-2 on the year, while George Mason improved to 4-4.

The match, which took place at Chaplin Park, was played under NCAA Division I rules, in which winning the majority of the doubles matches counted as one point.

The tandem of Albanese and Mateus Santos defeated Pally Ray and Daniel Gutierrez at number-one doubles, 6-1, while the number-two team of Daniel Fernandez and Kevin Mboko downed George Mason's Jakob Nielsen and Jimmy Lange by a 6-3 score. With a point already in hand, the Fighting Scots' third duo of Mauricio Santos and Alexander Anderson fell to Andrew Curtis and Alexis Pinsonneault by a 6-3 decisision.

Edinboro pulled to within one point of a victory after Albanese defeated Lange in the number one singles slot 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 10-4 and Mateus Santos beat Daniel Gutierres at number four, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. The Patriots, however, ran off the remaining four victories to steal the win. The closest the Fighting Scots came was Fernandez's close bout with Ray at number-two singles. He was edged by 7-5 and 6-4 sets.

Head coach Lee Underwood's team is back in action on Tuesday, taking on Belmont Abbey at 9:00 a.m.
