HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (March 15, 2017) – The Edinboro University men's tennis team played yet another close match on Wednesday as part of their spring break trip, coming out on the winning end of a 5-4 contest against Lenoir-Rhyne. With the match tied at 4-4, sophomore
Kevin Mboko rallied from an 8-4 deficit in the super tie break to defeat Tales Miranda and give the Fighting Scots the win.
Edinboro, who improved to 8-3, picked up its first win of their five-match trip in Hilton Head Island after opening with two close defeats to Division I George Mason, 4-3, and Belmont Abbey, 5-4. The Bears dropped to 7-6.
The Fighting Scots took two of three doubles matches to start the contest.
Vitor Albanese and
Mateus Santos defeated Tomas Hons and Shane O'Dea at number one, 9-7, and
Daniel Fernandez and Mboko beat Hamed Gandouz and Paul Lenz by an 8-3 decision at number two.
Albanese and
Mauricio Santos picked up wins for Edinboro at the first and third singles spots, respectively. Albanese beat Hamed Gandouz, 6-1 and 6-4, while
Mauricio Santos downed Alex Ayguavives by matching 6-4 scores. Mboko's match with Miranda at number-five singles was the only match of the day to go to a super tie break. Mboko took the first set, 7-5, with Miranda winning set two by a 6-2 score. Miranda jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but Mboko came back with six unanswered points to win, 10-8, and tally the decisive win for the Boro.
